In the just-announced news, John McCain has selected Alaska's Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate. So shocking was the official word, it may have even crashed Drudge Report. (Even a certain website thinks so.) But the McCain campaign's announcement is more than just about who might be the second-in-command of the U.S. come January, but about the mechanics behind these type of announcements. First, he chose a woman. Also, he announced the news today, on a Friday, before a long holiday weekend. Is this man crazy?

But, releasing the news immediately after the DNC wraps? Smart. The cable news networks have the rest of the day to fill with content, and they were planning to devote it to more over-analysis of the DNC, hyping up Obama's nomination acceptance speech. Now, pundits have a new talking point, and something to kill Obama's momentum with.
Dude looks like a lady. Because she is! "Hockey mom" Palin is the wild ace in McCain's hand and will undoubtedly help attract some of the "disaffected" Hillary Clinton supporters who don't have a woman to vote for anymore. This also means Obama is going to rely on Hillary even more, since he'll need her campaign trail help more than ever to keep Democratic women from getting behind Palin.
God's on her side. Palin is the "conservative Christian" type, which will help McCain score with party members who see McCain as Republican Lite. She's anti-abortion, which sits well with religious types who don't support their daughters' right to choose.
Change we can believe in. While Obama has all but owned the message of "change," McCain gets an assist from Palin, since her 2006 gubernatorial campaign in Alaska was billed as the same: Out with the old. She criticized her own Republican party members to get elected; perhaps she'll be the one criticizing Bush while McCain accept his fundraising dollars.
Surprise attack. Nobody really expected Palin to be picked, and even as names like Pawlenty and Romney disappeared from the short list in the past few hours, Joe Lieberman was still expected to have a better shot at being named VP than she. This makes for good cable news banter, and the Obama campaign likely caught a bit off guard.

This is absolutely, completely, one of the most stupid political moves in ages. It is just dumb–stupid. It completely blows the campaign for McCain, and it just shows his campaign's idiocy. The Alaska State Legislature–within the past few weeks–just authorized a state ethics investigation into the actions of Palin and her top staffers in regards to credible allegations of ethical wrongdoing by Palin and those staffers in regards to the baffling recent firing of Public Saftey Commissioner Walt Monegan. The investigation is occurring because many officials feel that Palin and others on her staff wrongly interfered with Monegan's firing by making hamfisted, heavy-handed phone calls on the issue. Palin just had to suspend one of those officials in regards to this incident. Poor Monegan got the shaft–and then Palin is selected to be a vice pressidential running mate? Wait until the Legislature issues a damning report on Palin and her cronies–that'll look good for the Republicans! Add to all of that the fact that she is horribly inexperienced and has zero qualifications to be vice president or president of the United States, and you've just seen the Republicans make an incredibly stupid move and compltely blow the election. Stupid all-around.
McCain is not taking his medication! He really needs help… His judgement is borderline irrational. I am so proud to be a Democrat. I think the Republicans should just sit this election out. They have a super-sonic senior citizen candidate unable to make sound decisions and unable to speak coherently about American issues. I'm not sure how much she'll attract the Hillary supporters. This woman is a social conservative who is very much pro-life. Me thinks that will not sit well with a majority of Hillary's strongest supporters. A very small minority will overlook that issue and just support her because she's a woman. Plus, how is Mccain going to use the "not experienced enough" card on Obama when his own pick for VP is even LESS experienced? Granted she's not running for president, but he's getting up there in age, so one may argue the liklihood of her having to step up to be pres. is higher than Biden's chance.
The base will love her and that's what he was trying to do, shore up that base. Too many damn kids and one of them has downs. Hunts. Fishes. Husband is a blue-collar guy. I hope the press scrutinizes the hell out of Palin. McCain isn't a spring chicken and whoever his VP pick is has a very real chance of being President of the most powerful country in the world. The domestic press has gotten so soft lately I'm not sure if they're up to the challenge.
