As the tabloid industry wonders whether its readership has really plateaued or is just going into hibernation during the economic meltdown, publishers have their hands on some pretty concrete evidence. At Life & Style, the Bauer pub has learned that at least for now, America doesn't care if there's a TomKat v. Brangelina war going on; the issue bombed. In maybe! related! news!, editor Donna Armstrong isn't expected back after maternity leave. And as for mixing celebrity and politics — readers are saying, "Yes please." Us Weekly's Sarah Palin attack issue held the circulation status quo, while People's Palin-sympathetic cover moved an estimated 1.75 million copies (compared to its usual 1.45m); which lends evidence this week's McCain family cover will also do well. And the week after, a special double issue with McCain on one side and Palin on the other!
Certainly we're witnessing a phenomenon here, where newsweeklies like Time and Newsweek are seeing their circulation plummet, while the tabloids have found a new content pool in turning politicos into scandal-crazed A-listers — and taking sides just like they do with Jennifer v. John, Brad v. Angelina, and Brad v. Jen. But what, oh what, might we be witnessing in real time? The regression of the body politic, we're guessing.

Tabloid editors out there listen up. People are tired of seeing Brad Angelina and Jen on the cover of tabloids every single week. It's been 3 years of constant fabrications and lies. How many times is Brad going to storm out, Angelina going to be frustrated and jealous and Jen going to cry about her lonely life to Brad. No wonder people are getting fired in your offices and newsstand sales are low. People are not buying the lies anymore and in fact just don't care. Find something new for your covers. A fresh face or a real scandal that doesn't involve these people.
Enough is Enough is right on target. Quit giving people rehashes of the same old crap and maybe…just maybe…your sales will rebound. I'm tired of the same ol' celebrity faces, most of whom act like spoiled children anyway. Do these magazines think we really need ANOTHER story about Brad and Angelina? That we need ANOTHER story to tell us Lindsay Lohan fell off the wagon yet? That we need ANOTHER story to hear what a pinhead Paris is? It's tiring and it celebrates people who's behavior and antics should be shunned, not celebrated.
Which brings up a whole other argument. Dear Media Rags: be careful how you handle things as well. Look at what happened to US WEEKLY in the wake of the Sarah Palin cover where they CLEARLY tipped their hand and the editors showed their political bias. End result: a record number of subscription cancellations to the point they're now offering a free half year so long as you'll stick around. The public has FINALLY wised up and realized it can speak with their pocket book, which is a glorious thing to see…
I love how this Palin woman parades that retarded baby like it is something we should all aspire for. SHE IS A CRIMINAL TO BRING THAT KID INTO THE WORLD TO SUFFER LIKE THAT!!
The fact is that a normal family can't support a kid like that. That means that the government has to pay social security for the rest of that kid's life. Isn't that wasteful spending? I guess it is wasteful when it has to be spent on someone else's retarded child!
Downs Syndrome kids and adults have an insurmountable degree of illnesses that range from mild to severe. They include Leukemia, Congenital heart disease,
Hearing problems, Intestinal problems, such as blocked small bowel or esophagus, Celiac disease,
Eye problems, such as cataracts,
Thyroid dysfunctions, Skeletal problems, Dementia - similar to Alzheimer's.
They all suffer from Mental retardation which is a disability that causes limits on intellectual abilities and adaptive behaviors (conceptual, social, and practical skills people use to function in everyday lives). Most people with Down syndrome have IQs that fall in the mild to moderate range of mental retardation. They may have delayed language development and slow motor development.
This Trig Palin kid will never be able to live on his own and the likelihood that he will live past 25 or 30 years is slim. SAD!!
