It barely beat "Religulous" in weekend grosses ($3.65 million vs. $3.40 million), and with "American Carol" running in 1,639 theaters compared to 502 for "Religulous," it managed to have a much lower per screen average than the latter (just $2,231 as opposed to $6,792 per showing for "Religulous"). With Maher's film budgeted at just $2.5 million vs. $20 million estimated for "American Carol," the documentary will be a moneymaker, while the latter won't.
