Associated Press to Make Duplicatible Content More Affordable

Newspapers have been running away from the Associated Press in droves. Tribune Co., that giant newspaper publisher, is even ditching them. Except they have to keep paying for the service for two years, since the AP's contract with members requires such a lengthy notice that they're quitting. Something about the AP trying to hike membership fees, which grant papers to right to use the wire service's copy. But, wait! As of yesterday, they're going to start cutting those fees, even though they wholeheartedly believe they're just being blamed by a bunch of complain-y editors who see circulation and ad revenue dropping. Not that the AP is admitting a sudden influx of "We're quitting!" notices had anything to do with their 180 on pricing. Says chief revenue office Tom Brettingen: "The notices, per se, didn’t. With or without notices, the situation was deteriorating." Hah! Per se! Fine, but what about your celebrity photo fees?
