David Gregory's Meet the Press
Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps

So blogs are reporting that David Gregory is definitively, definitely the new host of NBC's Meet the Press, and that Tom Brokaw will sign off his interim period after next Sunday's meet and greet with Barack Obama.

Of course, for now they remain rumors as NBC is like "What, we never said that!" and Gregory's camp refuses to comment. But The Huffington Post, which is claiming credit for the scoop, isn't exactly an unreliable source, so if they are reporting the story as fact, NBC might as well throw in the towel and give the job to Gregory anyway.

But confirmed or unconfirmed, Jeff Zucker's choice of David Gregory to fill Tim Russert's shoes is a strange one:

Gregory is the most milquetoast choice out of all the contenders, including NBC political director Chuck Todd and "dark horses" Katie Couric and Ted Koppel. Plus, doesn't Gregory have ties to Fannie Mae through his wife, Beth Wilkinson? That might make reporting on the Obama administration's top priority — the economy — slightly difficult. Then again, NBC News isn't one to care much about conflicts of interest.

And — whoops — if David Gregory indeed gets the spot on Meet the Press, that means the seat won't be filled by Gwen Ifill or Katie Couric, which means just another grumpy old white guy reporting back to us about an increasingly desperate administration.

How typically boring of the networks and news media? Why, they can't look out into the vast ocean of news media help? I think Jim Braude of New England Cable News would be a much better choice. Man, he's a pitbull when it comes to interviewing the Political World people. He will NEVER let them off the hook when it comes to answering a question. He's incredibly smart, a lawyer by education, has been in local government, a little bit and did not let Susan Estrich off with her cute little smile, twist and turn when she was stumping for the pro-Hillary book she wrote pre-primary season.
Braude's a catch.

Gregory is exactly the wrong person for this. He should stick to reporting the news–and that's it. Tom Brokaw or Ted Koppel would be the first and best choices. Not Gregory. If he is the choice–watch the rating tank immediately. Some people should just stick to news reporting–and that's it.

He puts me to sleep - he's boring and arrogant. Tim was never a blow-dried-hair kind of journalist. Tim was just smart, politically savvy, and down to earth. He was a prosecutor, not a journalist. Chuck Todd would be my choice - he's not a classic journalist in looks or behavior (like Tim) - but he knows his stuff.

Chuck Todd would have been my choice. I think he would have grown into the job, and to my eye, he seems fairly unbiased. Not too many in the NBC stable that I can say that about. Hopefully Stretch Greggory will do okay, but I can't watch him without thinking of Howdy Doody.

Say it ain't so! It's bad enough that we lost Tim Russert but to give such a high honor to David Gregory is …. It's just so bad that I can't even think anything without cursing…. I am depressed.

Please say this isn't true. I look forward to watching the show every Sunday. Gregory is a decent reporter, but he really should NOT get this job. I do not want to have to STOP watching the show I have been watching for years. How about someone new and energetic. Chuck Todd would be great! If not, Andrea Mitchell would be a great change. But David Gregory; come on… OLD and NO PERSONALITY… PLEASE RECONSIDER NBC. Is there anything we can do about this?

Not exactly a fan of Gregory but he's not exactly old. He's only 38, even if he looks 48.
