David Gregory is a Little Diva
The New Class

David Gregory is no Tim Russert in temperament or journalistic style, a fact made none the clearer than when we reported on a certain waitress-yelling spectacle from Gregory that lead to a rare Russert scolding against his coworker.

But now that it looks like D.G. is taking over for Tim Russert on Meet the Press and the deal is as well as done, what are going to be some of the more extreme differences you'll see on the NBC show?

Well, for one, the moderator is going to be way more of a diva than Russert ever was.

• "They recount, for instance, the time he ordered a Cape Cod cocktail on a press charter plane–then sent it back four times to achieve the ideal ratio of vodka to cranberry juice."

• "His luggage tends to fill two overhead storage compartments. 'He has a kind of traveling wardrobe,' one reporter explains."

• Hissy fits on camera, such as the one with former press secretary Scott McClellan:

White House press secretary Scott McClellan: Hold on. Cameras aren't on right now. You can do this later.

Gregory: Don't accuse me of trying to pose to the cameras. Don't be a jerk to me personally when I'm asking you a serious question.

McClellan: You don't have to yell.

Gregory: I will yell. If you want to use that podium and try to take shots at me personally, which I don't appreciate, then I will raise my voice, because that's wrong.

• "Gregory has spent the past two years staging similarly theatrical showdowns with the administration–many of them triggered by the White House inadvertently bruising his ego."

• From a Gawker thread about Gregory's bad behavior:

"Once, I was hanging with some friends in DC and we decided to go to the Capitol. We agreed to meet at a certain point at the front steps when we were done. There were maybe 8 of us. Well it turns out that David Gregory was reporting from the lawn of the Capitol around the spot where we were meeting up. The guy did his report, turned around, and proceeded to berate us and curse at us for being fame seeking assholes for ruining his shot and then asked if we wanted his autograph."

So there you have it folks…Meet the Press will turn from a highly-regarded, thoughtful debate between the host and several guests with perhaps differing opinions, into a bitch-fight between an egomaniac moderator and whoever dares call him out on his B.S. Lovely. Who doesn't want another Tucker Carlson, but working for Jeff Zucker instead of Phil Griffin?

I used to work at MSNBC and I've gotta say, pretty much every on-air personality in TV news is a raging asshole in some way or another. Olbermann is paranoid and psychotic, Matthews is a shameless sexist - but the word to describe David Gregory is definitely "diva". He can be a funny and personable guy when he's not acting like a goddamn silvery-maned child, but unfortunately that doesn't happen very often. Between Gregory's appointment and Luke Russert banging Jossip commenters' girlfriends, poor Timmy must be rolling over in his grave.

Someone on a gawker thread the other day described my feelings about Gregory perfectly. He would ask pretty basic questions in a way that made it look as if the press was doing its job, and made the Bush administration look like they were being "attacked by liberals". It was a symbiotic relationship (much like Cheney going on MTP), and allowed the administration to avoid the actual tough questions from Helen Thomas and use the "hey, we answer questions from David Gregory!" What a snore.

David Gregory is a huge mistake for NBC. Chuck Todd is much better suited to the role.

Did anyone even know who Tim Russert was before he died. I knew he hosted Meet the Press, but I never knew anything about him. Once he died, he was on tv for weeks. NBC already has enough terrible hosts, like Olbermann and Matthews on MSNBC, two horrible human beings..just ask the NYC waitresses! I don't see David Gregory as being that terrible, but if he has to work with those nutjobs, maybe things will change. I used to like it better when you only had 1/2 national news a day and no cable news shows. Man, I loved the old days when you'd hear about an election about 20 days before, not the 2 years we have now. It's ridiculous!
