Why MSNBC's Hand Is Forced to Re-Sign Chris Matthews
 

Maybe Chris Matthews' is-he-or-isn't-he-running campaign for one of Pennsylvania's Senate seats really was just a bid to get MSNBC to re-sign his contract. The Hardball host's deal, which is set to expire in June, has come under increasing scrutiny ever since network head Phil Griffin has made known his dislike for the spittle-flying Irishman. You see, Griffin had this master plan to install David Gregory in Matthews' 7pm slot once his contract was up, but then Gregory's own Race to the White House tanked and offered little confidence he could hold his own. But more importantly, NBC News' Steve Capus just handed Gregory the tony Meet The Press moderator chair, foiling Griffin's secret strategy of a Gregory-Olbermann-Maddow primetime play. Which means he's got little choice but to keep Matthews around, as Politico says is likely to happen, even if the guy is commanding a $5 million a year salary. Sure, most expect that figure to drop, given NBC's cost-cutting measures and the economy, but it will still have to be lucrative enough not to tempt Matthews from further "meeting with top Democratic officials" — and leaking the details to the press in a giant bird flip to 30 Rock — to explore a Senate run. I would rather have seen him go for the Senate seat, get humiliated in the primary and then have the added bonus of having this asshole off the air.

Obviously, reality set in and he knew he'd never make it, so mind as well rake in the dough as long as there are still those 5 or 6 viewers that actually tune into MSNBC - Home of the Official Obama Network.

And by the by, Paulie, Countdown with Keith Olbermann regularly comes in at #1 for its demographic, followed by the Rachel Maddow Show - both followed by that douche of all douches, Bill O'Reilly. So I'm thinking more than "5 or 6" people watch MSNBC. Maybe like the people who voted Obama in over McCain - you know, the majority of the country?
