Saturday Night WRONG: Governor Paterson Sketch

Hey, it takes a lot to offend me. I can watch any Todd Solondz movie (including Happiness) and laugh my ass off. I think Harmony Korine is pretty funny.

But something about this sketch on Weekend Update just struck me as a little bit mean-spirited. Because, ha ha, David Paterson is blind, get it? He holds things upside down and wants other "off" people to get into office.

Because listen: making fun of someone is fine, and I didn't even mind a bit of gallows humor thrown in for good measure. But it just seemed like a lazy sketch, because in truth there isn't much truth to Fred Armisen's impression of him, except that he's blind. Blind and hates New Jersey.

So, were the SNL writers grasping at straws here or did they genuinely think making fun of a blind state official just because he was blind and for no other discernible reason, was going to go over well in an audience of New Yorkers?

Either way, Amy Poehler is probably lucky she's leaving now, while the gettin's good.

Side Note: Hell yeah, Hugh Laurie!

Instead of being offended about that sketch, maybe you should be more offended that Gov Paterson is cutting college aid by 50 percent and raising tutition. This is going to hurt more lower middle class people than a parody.

I’m going to have to disagree with you on this on Drew, more than making the governor act blind, which he is, the sketch pointed out the hypocrisy of him being in office. He has had problems with drugs, cheated on his wife and is in fact a complete tool who doesn’t know what the hell he is doing. OK Spitzer effed up in a major way but I’d much rather he still be in office. SNL mocks actors for being fat, gay, very tall, very short, and they mock those with disabilities as well. When we start drawing lines in what a sketch comedy can and cannot do, then we put ourselves in dangerous ground. And while I am at it this site is still too pink to comment from work. But I do love Jossip.

Do you really see "no other discernible reason" that this guy is being mocked in this sketch? Because I thought they just made him look like a crook - yeah, a blind crook, but mostly just a sex-scandal havin', barely prepared to hold any sort of role in government, coke lovin' fiend. The blindness was a big part, but I think the point was definitely to mock his character, not his handicap.

The sketch was horrible, stupid, juvenile, childish, offensive, misguided, wrong, dumb, amateurish, asinine, inept, inane, and just absolutely, 100 percent STUPID. And that's coming from a group of comedy writers and actors here. In comedy writing, acting, direction and production, no matter what the medium, you have to have the comedic judgement to know where the line is and when not to cross that line. In this case, "Saturday Night Live" failed completely, 100 percent. The sketch was just incredibly stupid and offensive–and not funny. If you're not aware that you should not be making fun of someone because they have a visual disability, you should be writing comedy–at any level. Grow up, people.

Correction to above: The last line should read:

If you're not aware that you should not be making fun of someone because they have a visual disability, you should NOT be writing comedy–at any level. You should NOT be writing comedy if you think making fun of blind or visually-impaired people is funny. NOT. What you should be doing is seeing a counselor to get your head screwed on straight.

I thought it was funny. Possibly in poor taste but what isn't on weekend update? i agree with maria. He's blind we get it. But that doesn't mean we should be okay with the fact that perhaps he should not have the position he has, and unfortunately very few people call him on it because he is disabled. I think the best part of that sketch (besides when he just walks in front of Amy Poehler when she is saying goodbye) is when he says he's better than Blagojevich because he told everyone about his corruption and scandal before he got into office. That's the irony that's the true parody, and for those that are to lazy to get that you have physical comedy. Maybe it's lazy and a little formulaic but it doesn't make it any less satirically funny.ps. Hugh Laurie..is British people funny…if you know what i mean..

No, my point was that, yes, they were making fun of his blindness - but I just didn't think that was the ONLY reason they were making fun of him. It seemed more of a character-based attack than a blatant attack on his handicap, though obviously the blindness thing was part of it.

NOT A BIG DEAL! If Gov Paterson didn't want to be made fun of, JUST AS EVERY OTHER political figure in the U.S.,he should have declined the appointment of Gov. He even more so should have never (but respect him because he did) admit all his faults, it took courage to do that, but he became fair game when he did, Get over yourselves, it is a sketch show, not a biography.

Best line in the whole skit: "What do you have against New Jersey?" "Unfortunately a southern border."

Wow, I didn't know other politicians were as white as the driven snow. By the time you judge every politician on their past transgressions, there won't be many/any people left in office.
