A Visual Tour of Oprah's Struggle with Weight

Now that Oprah has once again vowed to get trim and healthy in the new year, let's take a look back at the daytime doyenne's lifelong struggle with fitness.

1988

After losing 67 pounds on a "liquid diet" that she would later admit amounted to nothing more than starving herself, Oprah was finally able to fit into a size 10 pair of Calvin Klein jeans she had desperately wanted. To celebrate, she wheeled out onto her talk show stage a wagon full of 67 pounds of pig fat. Two days after the show, a complacent Oprah could no longer fit into those jeans.

1992

By late 1990, Oprah had gained most of the 67 pounds back. And by 1992, she was well out of shape again.

1994

In 1994, Oprah, the recipient of two Daytime Emmys that year, was once again feeling and looking good. This time around, Oprah lost the weight in a healthy manner by training for and completing the Marine Corps Marathon.

1996

In 1996, Oprah wasn't as thin as she had been after the marathon, but she also wasn't as far gone as she'd been in the past. In order to head off any further weight gain, she hired personal trainer Bob Greene.

1997

Oprah and Greene, who claims to have started admonishing his family for using salt at the age of eight, would go on to write two books together. When the pair weren't writing, they were running, which kept Oprah healthy and lean for the rest of the 90s.

2000

Oprah's exercise regimen kept her weight relatively in check for years, though she would fluctuate slightly. Oprah show titles from 2000: "Explosive Children," "Take It Off," "Weight Loss Firsts," "Turn Your Health Around in 2000," "Why This Boy Was Raised a Girl."

2005

She looked great in 2005, the same year she aired an episode called "Dogs with Jobs." By 2006, she would find herself at a healthy, maintainable weight: 160 pounds.

2007

Alas, by 2007, the year Oprah opened a girl's school in South Africa, the pounds were creeping back.

2008

In 2008, Oprah hit an even 200 pounds. In a recent article in O magazine, she wrote that, before coming to terms with her latest weight gain, she felt like a "cow" and considered skipping appearances out of embarrassment. She added that she no longer wants to be thin, just healthy and strong.

My sister always says that if Oprah, one of the richest and driven women in the world, who has her own chef and personal trainers, cannot keep her weight off, that it shows the rest of the world how impossibly hard it can be. There is little hope for the rest of us. I say be strong and healthy, too.

Anything worth having takes work; and Oprah puts her mind and time into building her empire. She is the woman that has everything and big or thin, she will still have everything that she has worked hard to achieve. If she really wants to be thin, she will accomplish that goal too!

Well, I think it's a problem of self-control and that is something many people deal with, regardless of their economic status. On one hand I think it could be easy for her to get thin since she has access to all kinds of nutricionists, chefs and instructors. But on the other hand, I think that being THAT rich and having access to all kinds of excesses (eg: Food and other pleasures), has made her unable to keep her weight balanced.

i think if oprah is having this many problems maintaining a reasonable weight, she should just get a gastric band or have some kind of medical intervention.

I think Oprah is just a glutton. I like Oprah, but I think she's probably very piggish when it comes to food. Her chef can cook anything for her. She probably has a gym in her house that she can walk to. Sorry, I have to cook my own foods and drive to the gym. As busy as she is, I'm sure she spends plenty of time at the table stuffing her face and on the couch or somewhere else siting down. I don't understand fat celebrities.
