Give It to The Nanny: Why Drescher Is Better Than Kennedy

So it looks like Irish bootlegging scion Caroline Kennedy might have this New York Senate appointment all wrapped up. If you've been paying attention at all, you know this is a disaster, primarily because the only political thing Caroline Kennedy’s ever done is be conceived by one of America’s most beloved presidents.

With Kennedy as the probable pick, other Senate hopefuls must be dejected, none more than former The Nanny star Fran Drescher, who’d thrown her unlikely hat into the ring early last month. We're a bit disappointed, too. Franny may not have been more qualified than Andrew Cuomo, but she's definitely as, if not more, qualified than Kennedy. Don't believe us? Let us count the ways.

She beat cancer
In 2000, Drescher was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which she eventually overcame and wrote about in her second bestseller Cancer Schmancer. One of the most important problems the government is going to have to address in the coming years is the health care dilemma. Who better to help broach this insanely complicated policy question than someone who’s traversed the Byzantine American medical system herself?

She’s a female celebrity, too
Not that that should matter, but some people are saying that Hillary’s replacement should also be a well-known woman, so we’re just putting it out there.

She's familiar with the criminal justice system
No stranger to hardship, years before she was afflicted by cancer, Drescher was raped at gunpoint in her Los Angeles apartment. Hurt but unwilling to shrink from fear, Drescher pressed charges and eventually saw her attacker go to prison. Despite having a law degree, the never-practicing Caroline Kennedy's not once seen the inside of a courtroom. Drescher, on the other hand, has been in the thick of American criminal justice and could address the system's woes from a fresh perspective.

She's written two books
Not sure why, but Caroline Kennedy mentions the fact that she's written books whenever she's asked about her political qualifications. Fran Drescher's not written as many books as Kennedy, but she's authored two huge hits. So there's that.

She started two nonprofits
After beating cancer, Drescher founded two nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping other women diagnose cancer in stage one, when it is most susceptible to treatment. She's now president of the boards of both, where she works in conjunction with a famous honorary board member you've perhaps heard of: Hillary Rodham Clinton.

She's a born and raised New Yorker
Unlike Caroline Kennedy, who bounced around quite frequently after being born in New York, Fran Drescher was born in Queens and stayed there until her early 20s. After spending some time in LA, Drescher moved back to New York and has been here since. As for Kennedy, although she's now resided in New York for quite some time, she hasn't lived anywhere besides the luxurious Upper East Side, a locale both geographically and financially far away from the real ills of New York. Never trust a New Yorker who's never seen a man shitting in the street.

I've seen her on a number of news programs and she is incredibly well spoken. She also has a broad understanding of the problems with our "healthcare" system. I think she'd be great. The LAST THING NEW YORK OR ANYONE NEEDS is more politicians or political daughters, no matter who they are. Fran for the win!

Fran Drescher is one of the smartest celebrities in Hollywood. She created, wrote, and starred in "The Nanny" and has been a diplomat for the US, and met with foreign leaders to discuss women's health. Meanwhile, can you imaging Fran AND Al Franken in the Senate? I think a lot more people would tune into freakin' CSPAN; civics would be totally cool!

my vote is for Fran…Caroline has trouble putting a sentence together in publuc….and what makes everyone thinjk she is entitled becuase she is a Kennedy…. very few of them have done anything productive…..all born with a silver spoon. Fran drescher has made something of herself and has worked and fought for very important causes…..If she doesnt get the appointment (and lets face it…no pull) she should run for the seat in "10

Fran would make an excellent senator for the great state of New York! Being from and living in it, bumping elbows with all the other New Yorkers and knowing their problems and issues, makes more a million times more qualified! Her Hollywood connections don't make the vote for me, but her well-spoken abilities and grace under pressure without 1 million 'ya knows' makes listening to her a pleasure over CK!

Vote for Fran and make her the next Senator to fill Hillary's seat!

When Fran has an interest, she educates herself. She thinks things through, rather than doing things on a whim, or because those who came before her did it. She is graceful, well spoken and intelligent. I'd vote for her in a heartbeat!

PLEASE vote for Fran!! This is a woman who not only (and thankfully) beat cancer, but had the spiritual AND political motivation to help others with it as well.

I'm impressed with her ambition and her abilities. She's passed laws, was appointed a US Diplomat and served her country by speaking in other countries, speaks beautifully, familiarly, and with heart to the public, and has an incredible fan base, both in the public eye and political world.

GO FRAN!!!!

I have heard a lot of talk about why Fran Drescher won't make a good senator but not very much about what she will do as a senator. I think that she would be a lovely choice though I think we should hear a bit more about future plans. I am 100% for Fran as senator because I believe in her drive to make the world a better place.

Fran Drescher is the most mesmerizing, honest, compassionate, funny, brilliant and blunt people I am privileged to have as my friend and to have partnered with on Cancer Schmancer Movement, 501c4 and Cancer Schmancer Foundation, 501c3. She, her Team, her Board members, advisory board members, and volunteers have great respect for her. The organizations have accomplished so much in the demand to save women's lives. There are diagnostic tools RIGHT NOW to prevent cancer at an early stage. Prevention + Survival.

Creating, starring in, executive producing and as a writer on a hit sitcom is no easy feat. One must have a good sense of logic and business, as well as a great deal of talent.

For years, Fran has been on the lecture circuit after publishing two NY Times Best Sellers, Enter Whining and Cancer Schmancer, the latter of which means CANCER IS NOT THE BOSS OF ME.

She is "the voice" of the New Yorker that grew up in Queens. She will be the face no longer associated with The Nanny and other wonderful acting roles. Fran Drescher's face will become synonymous with politics.

Considered to be a top speaker in our country, the United States State Department appointed Fran a U.S. Special Envoy. She currently lectures globally about Women's health care issues.

I have been told by many Washingtonian's that include Senators and Congresswomen that Fran is one of the best "lobbyists" for women's healthcare reform and rights.

Fran will always do the right thing for New York and her political voice will be heard.

I think Fran would be an amazing New York Senator. She is dedicated to this pursuit and is a sincere, caring and very smart and well spoken person. I know she would work hard for the people of New York, and as a bonus we would have a gorgeous Senator!

Fran has eloquence, intelligence and huge commitment on her side. She is a native New Yorker and loves New York. She has experience in politics and and is one of the most inspirational public speakers - she's REAL. This is what we need in politics right now - someone who speaks out and acts for the people

This is by far the best insight I've heard into the whole Drescher/Kennedy debate. And it's from a FOX show, no less… although I can't say I've ever seen it before.

Karl Spensen - you haven't seen it bc it's not an actual show on Fox, just two "comedian" hacks who used clips from Fox.

Anyway, I've read up on Fran in recent years and have been impressed by her. I would defintely vote her over Caroline.

Fran Drescher is one of the brightest, most charismatic women I have ever met. She is focused, dilligent, knowledgeable and compassionate. Her combination of life, street and work smarts tells me she would be the best choice to represent New York. And I'm a New Yorker!! Fran Drescher can take the heat. I don't think Ms. Kennedy can match Ms. Drescher.

Although I don't think Fran is qualified enough… and I don't think that going through those obstacles and all means your policies will be more empathetic (ahem… remember what ethnic minorities expected from Condoleezza?)… I agree with the vote for Fran over Caroline.
Fran did a lot for an actress.
Caroline did very little for a lawyer and… uh… a Kennedy.

Caroline Kennedy has more political experience by birth. Drescher beating cancer and all is honorable, but it has nothing to do with politics. Neither does her being a celebrity. Kennedy raised thousands of dollars for education and other causes. I say that is more political than the nonprofit organizations Drescher founded because it is more related to local issues.
