What Nancy Grace's Floating to the Top Means About America

If American television viewers continue to watch tabloid cable news shows, does that reflect more poorly on our citizens, or Nancy Grace?

It's a question Ms. Grace wouldn't even consider, given that her eponymous primetime CNN Headline News show is somehow number one among 25-54 year olds. (Competing networks will point out they beat Grace in in the 18-34 demo, or 18-54. Whatever.) And according to one theory we're willing to let play out, Grace's ratings triumph is evidence that no recession nor political miracle can stop our incessant need for other people's pain. Argues the Paley Center's J. Max Robins:

Grace's ratings ascension is evidence that we're back to the good old bad days of cable news-a steady diet of murder and mayhem. Indeed, Grace's recent resurgence may be our post-election reality check. Instead of talking about where this country is headed and what the challenges are, we're being fed gruesome details about how a little girl's life ended, with Nancy Grace playing judge, jury, and executioner.

And with Glenn Beck off her Headline News back as he heads to Fox News, they might as well give her the entire 8pm-11pm block for chasing down missing blonde girls.

Nancy Grace rocks. She is a pitbull with lipstick but knows her shit. Sure, she's biased and judgemental, but she always has facts to back up her opinions.

but she always has facts to back up her opinions.
You mean like how she was completely wrong about the Duke Lacrosse Rape hoax.
I remember on the day that the accused where declared innocent Nancy was too humiliated to do her show.

Lesley, she is actually not that great of a legal mind. In addition to constant mistakes on her show about simple issues about the law, she doesn't seem to have been thought of as a good prosecutor, she was reprimanded a bunch and had cases overturned, and both are hard to do. She's not that smart, she's just hysterical and shrill and likes report on missing white women which somehow all equals ratings gold.

If Nancy has her way, we'd all be in jail. Cuz we all must be guilty of something.

@CDD: I believe Nancy as a prosecutor never lost a case…or something close to that!

Her ratings are not surprising. When faced with global economic straits, 2 wars (Iraq and Afghanistan), changeover in the White House and a general sense of feeling overwhelmed and out of control, a lot of folks escape their own misery by rubbernecking over other people's tragedies. I think Alfred Hitchcock once said something about people liking to be scared, frightened or aghast at stories, because they don't think it will happen to them, just someone else. Maybe my summation of the quote is off, but I think the general idea is valid.

I would suggest that anybody who thinks Nancy "has her fact stragit" read the wikipedia article about her. That almost covers her lies and fabrication of facts. She was wrong about so many things and has lied to win her cases (the supreme court of Georgia cited her at least twice for prosecutorial misconduct)that it is too much to go into here.

I’m very sick and tired of turning on my t.v. and seeing this case. I feel for Caylee, so dont get me wrong when you read this, I just needed to get my two cents in since the whole U.S. already has. I understand that there are a lot of mixed feelings about this situation, but with all do respect it really is nobody’s fucking business, sorry for my language but I really hate when the media makes something serious into a fucking crisis. Technically I do think that Casey Anthony killed her daughter, hell no one in their right mind would be able to live knowing that their child is missing, or worse, but I do think that this media attention is such a waist of fucking money, time and frankly like I said before its nobodies business but those involved. Hell I live in Williamsbrug Virginia, many miles away, and I don’t give two shits about this situation, I’m definitely not saying I do not feel for Caylee, but I think there is bigger problems to worry about, like our screwed up economy for instance. If Casey Anthony murdered her daughter or had anything to do with it, she should be set on fire alive, but there is the little saying….Innocent until PROVEN guilty. NOBODY NOT EVEN NANCY GRACE CAN JUDGE HER. ONLY THE HIGHER POWER YOU MAY BELIEVE IN CAN. Im really sick a tired of seeing Nancy Fucking Grace on t.v. talking shit about this. That fat bitch needs to keep her fucking nose out of peoples business. I know many of you will blast me on this blog about what I have said, but just keep this in mind you are not the judge, lawyer or anything in this case, so stop fucking making shit worse. I hate turning on my t.v. and all we hear about is murders rapes and so on. What about the people who saved somebody today or tomorrow that go unnoticed? Answer that. This is a fucking screwed up planet and we will all have to answer to what we have done someday. Only thing Nancy Grace and people like her are doing is making entertainment for the twisted people with no life. Move on its nothing anybody can do about it. Let the evidence come to light. If shes guilty let her burn. If I were Casey Anthony and I had people sticking mics in my face….regardless of if I did it or not, that mother fucker would get a nice swift kick in the face. Oh and to Nancy Grace and anyone who doesnt like what I have said…..Fuck you I really dont give a fuck. I AM THE VERY DISEASE YOU PRETEND TO BE!

She's a worthless liar whose only purpose in life is to smear the innocent and inspire undeserved sympathy for the guilty. She should be in jail for interfering with police investigations.

Nancy Grace is a moron. What that says about her popularity makes me embarrassed for Americans.

Sometimes I am fully with Nancy Grace on the issues, and other times I totally disagree, and find her overbearing, and out of line. Plus, way too quick to judge. But that is because she almost always assumes the accused is guilty. Partly, because she is a former prosecutor, and partly because she, or rather fiancee was a victim of crime, something she frequently brings up on her show. With the Duke hoax I was shocked, and even angry, at how quick she was to assume the three accused were guilty, when most everyone else could plainly see it was a set up. But in cases like her current focus, the Caylee Anthony case, I rather enjoy her approach, since it is plainly obvious to all but the blind, that Casey killed her child. Her approach is always the same, I just don't always agree with it.
