He's Ba-ack: Ben Sherwood's GMA Appearance Gets Ugly Backstage

Once upon a time there was an overzealous executive producer named Ben Sherwood. He worked on ABC's Good Morning America, where he was suspected of planting items about nasty funeral mutterings, and eventually got what he thought he deserved: a big fat zilch from CBS, where he was said to be the "leading candidate" (his anonymous words?) for the top job at em>The Early Show. Except now Sherwood has written a book about tragedy survivors, and where does he plan on promoting it? On none other than Good Morning America! Having left on not so great terms, you can imagine how some insiders are feeling.

Sherwood scored most of his private contact info for the survivors book coworkers while he was still at ABC, according to one source happy to point out Sherwood's shortcomings. And while he does thank ABC's Jessica Stedman Guff and Mimi Gurbst in the text, some ABC bookers are miffed they weren't acknowledged — and our source argues Sherwood should've shared some of his book's advance with the bookers, although, like, really?

With Sherwood getting to plug his book on GMA next Monday, Jan. 26, some ABC staffers are said to have written a formal complain to Kerry Smith, the network's senior VP of editorial quality (yes, really), but given her longstanding friendship with Sherwood, it's likely to fall on deaf ears. That, and Sherwood's wife is Karen Kehela — the Imagine Entertainment honcho who's been caught up in Sherwood's missteps before — somebody many are, we're told, unwilling to cross. Because Ms. Kehela, apparently, retains the powers of Oprah.
