Fear of Upsetting Obama Means Caroline Kennedy Will Be New York's Next Senator
 

If only because Gov. David Paterson doesn't want to upset Barack Obama. But since when did Paterson care what other politicos felt?

According to the Chatty Cathy class of senator hopefuls who know they're not getting the job, Ms. Kennedy will be Paterson's choice — because not choosing her would "greatly embarrass" and "entirely humiliate" the formerly private lass of the American political dynasty, as well as offend tomorrow's new president. Sources intimate to the Post:

Another potential candidate told The Post that he was convinced that Kennedy would get the job because Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, - who polls show is the public's favorite to succeed Clinton - failed to line up the right replacement at the AG's office.

"Andrew just couldn't assure the governor that he could arrange for [Assembly Speaker Sheldon] Silver to provide an acceptable successor," said the contender.

A third potential candidate claimed that Paterson's repeated contention - told to the media in private - that there is no front-runner is "baloney."

"It's been a done deal from the start," said the would-be candidate.

But if Paterson does choose Kennedy, that means he's not choosing a seasoned politician who's spent years grooming herself for the position. And that's going to piss off persons like these. Persons like Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney of Manhattan, whose support Mr. Paterson will be relying on when his own term comes up for reelection.

Er, I wouldn't use Fred Dicker as a source if I were you. Two weeks ago he had a story swearing, for sure, that Rep. Steve Israel was going to be picked. Same language. Done deal, blah,blah,blah.

The buzz is that Kirsten Gillibrand could very well be Paterson's choice.

I do not think CK is a shoe-in unless she can guarantee strong Obabma support/fund raising to Patterson's reelction campaign. Who can bring home the bacon for Patterson? B/c he may be running against Bloomberg, with his unlimited coffers, so who can be his best advocate?

Not sure how smart it was for Paterson to not at least put Cong. Gilliland (district between Duchess County & Albany, going west into the Catskills) on the short list, at least for PR. He could have used that region's good will.

Caroline ~ Please do not give it up. We need a Kennedy in Congress. I am so sorry but this is not about you, personally, it is about the historical symbol of hope and absolute integrity the Kennedy family has stood and died for. I wish I could hug you, I wish I could hear your personal concerns. There is no way you owe this country. You have paid one of the highest sacrifice. The exception is …. so many of us .. have suffered greatly too.
