China Edits Obama's Speech

CHINA-US-VOTE-OBAMA-DIPLOMACY

Even though over here in the U.S. of A. we greeted Barack Obama's inauguration speech like the somber breath of fresh air that it was, not every country was quite so pleased with the, er, interpretation.

At one point, Obama said earlier generations "faced down communism and fascism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions." He later addressed "those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent - know that you are on the wrong side of history."

Yeah, Chinese officials weren't too happy with that reference to communism as if it were a bad thing, so most Beijing newspapers cut the paragraph out entirely. In China Central Television's broadcast of the event, the translator "appeared flustered" and they cut the sound after "facism." Ironic, no?
