Some geniuses have figured out the rumors about Anna Wintour getting ousted from her position by Si Newhouse. And of course, the explanation involves more than a glimmer of truth of the friction between the Vogue editrix and her higher ups over Conde Nast.
First off, a little backstory for those who haven't been paying attention: In December, rumors began circulating that Carine Roitfeld, editor of Vogue France would replace Anna. But it was too Devil Wears Prada to be true. So were the earlier rounds that involved the Russian Vogue editor Aliona Doletskaya, which were at least a little more original. Then came the retorts that Barack Obama was going to give Anna a new position as an ambassador, or that Anna would be retiring entirely, which she vehemently denied. And as for the truth?
A high-level source tells us that the Roitfeld story, which emerged as the two sides pressed on with very difficult contract negotiations, was intended to convey to Anna and the world that Wintour wasn't indispensable and that the company had other options if an agreement couldn't be reached.
Meanwhile Anna's been feuding with Conde Nast CEO Chuck Townsend and the two of them have been letting their subs leak items to the press to leverage their opposing positions: On one side, the Conde Nast execs who believe the Vogue brand could lose Wintour and not lose more ad pages than they already have, and on the other side, Anna's crew who would like you to believe that she's as much of the Vogue brand as the name itself.
So final analysis? The rumors had basis in fact, although the details were all wrong. If anyone replaces Wintour, it probably won't be another Vogue editor, but perhaps someone from the Times who's been very vocal about the demise of Wintour's control?
