Lost Loses to American Idol

It's official: People would rather watch a singing competition than ABC's convoluted castaway show Lost, which seems to be getting confusing-er which each season. After mumblings that the writers of the show had no freaking idea where they were going with this or any other season, the premiere tallied only 11.5 viewers, more than 5 million less than it did a year ago. Meanwhile, 25.4 million tuned in to Fox to see if Paula would fall off her chair in a Xanax-induced overdose, and stayed to watch the series premiere of Lie to Me (13.2 million) And you know what? It makes sense that people would rather watch Idol than Lost.

No one likes to feel stupid. Lost consistently keeps viewers in the dark concerning nearly every plot point. And now there is time travel or something? Who knows, I'll be watching Simon dish it out to some idiot from Boise so I can feel better about myself. Call it schadenfreude or call it the reason people watched television since Chuck Barris came up with The Gong Show: We all like to feel superior to our television shows.

Personally, I recorded Lost and watched American Idol while I waited so I could fast forward through commercials. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people did the same.
