Next Wednesday, Expect a Whole Lot More of America's SweetCouric

What's that? You haven't heard enough of Katie Couric's comeback since her Sarah Palin interview, and how she's America's most beloved anchorwoman (behind Rachel Maddow) now? Well then you must work for CBS, which is going to flog this horse into the ground (mixed metaphors are fun!), since starting next Wednesday, Katie Couric will be on at 8 p.m. along with her regular appearance on CBS Evening News.

Mr. McManus said that Wednesday’s prime-time newscast is intended not as a tryout for a new show (CBS is already the most-watched network in prime time) but as a one-off to try to attract new viewers to “The CBS Evening News,” which has been stuck in third place in the ratings since more than a decade before Ms. Couric’s arrival in September 2006.

“So many of her talents and so much of what makes Katie a great broadcaster can’t be exhibited in the tight format between 6:30 and 7,” Mr. McManus said.

So CBS is already #1 in prime time, Katie Couric hasn't helped the ratings for CBS Evening News, put somehow it's a really good idea to put her on during the most crucial time of the day, ratings-wise? Mmm-hmmm. Maybe CBS is trying to take a cue from NBC and chip into its prime time block because they've run out of ideas for scripted shows. Is the station trying to use Couric to make up for their own wacky version of Ben Silverman?
