How HBO Only Stole Part of PostSecret's Gimmick

biglovecast

To promote the new season of Big Love, HBO went the "it's all about secrets" route. (Because Bill and his brood of three, maybe four, wives is full of them!) And what better way to get on the marketing bandwagon of secrets than attempt a campaign with PostSecret, the diary of not-for-your-eyes musings? HBO thought so, and tried to get in with the site. They were turned down.

Instead, they created Web of Secrets, a rip-off of Frank Warren's site-blog-culture meme, reports AgencySpy.

Ok, fine. But So besides their very similar approach, are the sites really all that similar? Well for one, PostSecret is all about creativity; people submit artful photographs and collages with their secrets scrawled across them. HBO's site is just text, though keywords are clickable so you can find new secrets including whatever word you click on.

And also, while Web of Secrets' submitters do right by their kids:

PostSecret's sumbitters want to do wrong by kids that aren't even theirs:

Yeah, well, so many of postsecret's "secrets" are complete fabrications. No doubt the majority are legit, but some are transparently contrived.

I'm sure some of the secrets are fake on PostSecret. I like Big Love but I'm glad Frank turned them down. It he started using his site to promote anything it would be the death of it.
