OK! Now Just Throwing Wet Toilet Paper at the Wall to See What Sticks

Now celebrity tabloids are as interesting as the celebrities they cover! At struggling OK!, owner Richard Desmond just ordered the ouster of his two toppers: general manager Kent Brownridge and editor-in-chief Susan Toepfer.

Brownridge, the former Jann Wenner No. 2, was installed at OK! last year as Desmond hedged his bets and continued his not-so-stellar foray into American gossip. Having helped make Us Weekly into the No. 2 celeb weekly contender, it was assumed Brownridge could repeat the magic. Except there was a new reality: Over-saturation in a crowded market where everything looks the same, plus Americans' tightening disposable income to spend on trashy rags. Not a formula to make an also-ran celebrity weekly into a front-runner, or even a real competitor, especially with Desmond clamping down hard on cash for exclusive cover photos.

As for Toepfer, she's replaced Brit Sarah Ivens, whose job title was a liability to her wanting to get married and have kids. Except, um, she's back, replacing her successor.

And now they're both gone, reports the Post, along with their teams. Brownridge had to catch a flight to London for an "emergency" meeting with Desmond, where he was summarily told the bad news. Let's hope they at least paid for his return airfare … in coach.
