TV Guide Makes Nice With Those Raucous Teen Networks

When a stock dips below a certain price point, it gets delisted from the Nasdaq. But what would it take for a TV network to get delisted from TV Guide's programming guide? Like they did with MTV and The CW?

Officially, it's because of the magazine's "older" readers, who aren't interested in A Double Shot at Love or Gossip Girl, that TVG removed the networks from its line-up, but as WowoWow points out, that doesn't explain the inclusion of Toon Disney.

Cynics that we are, we'll hang on to the theory that more was at play behind the scenes — as in, while ABC and NBC chose to advertise their shows in the magazine, The CW and MTV didn't bother spending with TV Guide. And if you don't buy a full page, why should they bother telling readers when those brats on 90210 are going to have teenage sex again?

Oh well. Beginning Feb. 9, the scandal is over; TVG president Scott Crystal says the networks will re-appear in the magazine. "After a recent test period, the CW and MTV will be returning to TV Guide Magazine’s primetime listings grids with the February 9th issue. From time to time, the network listings in this section will shift in the form of additions and/or deletions. TV Guide Magazine continually evaluates the magazine’s various sections and features in order to provide the best in television entertainment coverage for our loyal readers." Also, according to their publicist, "Crystal responded to each reader inquiry to explain format testing and thank them for their feedback."

Interestingly, this "scandal" had little to do with MTV and The CW, and a whole lot more to do with how much attention TV Guide can snag for itself. Particularly, when everyone is claiming the magazine is on death's door, and who needs printed TV listings anyhow?, but then everyone gets so pissy when those listings actually change — or disappear.
