Barbie Goes to China, Doesn't Take Miko

Who says China is having a recession as well? Because by American standards, the Chinese must be doing great, or why else would we be shipping all our culture over there? The latest export is our own Barbie, who will be well received in her new Shanghai locale: an eight-story flagship building complete with a "Barbie Bar."

Ironically, Mattel has often been criticized for not having an Asian Barbie in development until the mid-80s. And even now, if we through some names like Kira and Miko your way, you'd probably have no idea they were part of the Barbie line-up. I seriously had to Google Midge because I thought she was the Asian one. So putting a toy that so thoroughly represents Western culture and our blatant disregard for 70% of the world in China may have not been the best idea Mattel has ever come up with. But maybe now we'll get our "Friendly Neighbor to the East Barbie" that we asked for Chris in '97.

Wow. Way more interesting than the classic blond Barbie. If I was still 7 years old I would totally want that. Actually, I kind of want it now….

Not just the eyebrows, why are her eyes green? And why does it look like she's had eyelid surgery? She just looks like a regular Barbie with black hair and a qipao…

Pretty, it's funny how it:
1.) looks better than regular Barbie
2.) except for the round face, doesn't even LOOK remotely Asian (She could pass as Filipina Barbie, except her eye color is TOO LIGHT and she the shadows indicate that she has sculpted cheeks? The Asians I know have flat faces!)
3.) well, isn't Barbie made in China? So this is basically a Barbie for the children that probably part-take in the assembly, should they be able to afford it? What a surprise that there wasn't a Chinese Barbie to represent the largest population in the world at at least 1.25 billion!

I grew up during the early '90s disappointed that my dolls didn't look anything like me, I would have settled for Asian Barbie! I totally doubt that, although existing, that Asian Barbie was available for purchase.

So instead I played with action figures, cars, and baseball.
