O'Reilly vs Olbermann: Who's Worse?

worse

Bill O'Reilly is a stupid racist posing as a newsman and shamming old people and rednecks into buying poison. To us, there's really nothing worse on television today. Literally nothing. We'd rather every station constantly play HeadOn ads than have to hear about the lying prick ever again. Amazingly, some people disagree. Like this commenter, who said that Keith Olbermann is "every bit as awful" as Billdo. Could it be? Let's take a look.

In order to really get to the bottom of this, we've got to remove politics from the discussion. If you want to crack down hard on Mexican immigration and believe American troops should be in Iraq for another hundred years if that's what it takes, you're probably going to be more likely to side with Billdo. If, however, your values don't gibe with torturing prisoners, chances are you're an Olbermann fan. That's easy and those aren't the answers we're looking for, so try and set aside your particular political biases as we continue.

Let's also agree that both men are liars who distort facts to make points. Here, a video of Keith Olbermann lying:

What he said there is not true. Now, here, a clip of Billdo lying:

Got it? Both are arrogant liars. Moving on.

If we accept that both O'Reilly and Olbermann are merely demagogues using duplicitous parlor tricks to better cater to their respective, gawking audiences, in order to get to the bottom of whether one really is as disgusting as the other, we've got to decide if one character does more harm with his lies—consider it like being a sniffer in a dog shit contest. To that end, while we're fully willing to admit that Keith Olbermann is a conceited, rich, hypocritical windbag, his saving grace is that at least he's not a rotten bigot like his ugly Irish counterpart.

Bill O'Reilly has proven time and again that he is not only disdainful of blacks, non-Christians, gays and women, but that he's unashamed of his hate. It's almost like the prick gets off on sounding like an old racist sheriff, fire hose in one hand, wife-beatin' stick in the other.

• "But I don't want these people [gays] intruding on a parade where little children are standing there, watching."

• "Most gays did behave properly, but some were exhibitionistic, sir. And whenever you cluster a group like that, you're going to have some of those people."

• "Any woman who signs on to work at Harvard gets 100 pair of shoes…to make it even more enticing, they're gonna give women shoes, because all women want shoes."

• [Responding to Dr. William Frey, who said that in 50 years, whites in America will be outnumbered by minorities] "Yes. We'll all be dead. Thank God, right?"

• "But it's an amazing amount of kids involved with this – 20 – in an affluent school district. This isn't, you know, the inner city; you would think that these kids would have some kind of a values system."

The one incident we can find about Keith Olbermann being a "bigot" comes from several insane-o right wing blogs. It's an old story that accuses the former sportscaster of racism for calling a black football player named Roscoe Parrish "Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles" during an exciting play in a game. It's a ludicrous charge and fails to acknowledge that "Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles" is a very famous restaurant in LA. It's also very different from all the quotes above, from which, you may have noticed, we've excluded O'Reilly's infamous Harlem restaurant rant. That one left room for doubt, those included above do not.

reilly_olbermann

As one final discussion, let's look at the two mens' personal lives for further evidence about their natures. As for any misgivings about Olbermann's relationship with his young girlfriend, it's important to note that this New York article says Katy Tur and Olbermann had "recently" started living together in 2007, when she was 23 (fresh out of UCSB) and he was 48. A huge age difference, indeed, but very legal and completely different from the rumor claiming they started living together when Tur was 17.

O'Reilly, on the other hand, settled out of court in a well publicized battle with Andrea Mackris, a former Fox News employee who claims he sexually harassed her on several occasions, including once when he called her and jerked off while they spoke. Nice guy.

Again, to be sure, Olbermann is not the type of man to beatify, and he should be watched with the same amount of skepticism one brings to a magic show…but he's still better than Bill O'Reilly. That might not be saying much, but it's enough for our discussion here.

O'Rielly puts a damper on outrageous governmental actions. Olbermann encourages them. Both like to demonize opponents, but in the long run who really does the most damage?

At least Olbermann can anchor the Superbowl (sort of), if O'Reilly tried that he'd have all the players show proof of insurance, proof of citizenship…

Keith O. is a freak and everyone at Rock. knows it but he's the only freak in town that can bring in some sort of ratings for MSLSD. Ratings are going down, have you heard? Nancy and the murders all around the nation are bagging on the pervert's numbers! Whoa! I'd much rather hear about a man with his pants around his ankles who denies killing his pediphile priest than listen to KO lie, rant and rave. Bill OReilly is a blowhard….however, he does invite the "opposition" to come in and go at it with him. Keith is a wimp (come on, you know his skin is soft and so white) who'll only invite on people who will agree with his crazy viewpoint…and he distorts, totally dillusional. I hear he lives with some chick who is about 17…so I suspect he'll be on Nancy's night time gig sometime soon.

Bub, you are lying through your tooth gap. Do you actually think the examples you cited point to racism and homophobia on the part of O'Reilly? Step away from the crack pipe and get a reality check.

Keith Olbermann lies, and he does so continuosly. Most recently, he told his audience that Bernard Goldberg was fired from CBS News. (Wrong, Bathtub Boy. Goldberg quit.) During the campaign, he spouted something from Think Progress about Sarah Palin cutting the special needs budget in Alaska. Another lie.

And here is the worst feature of Olbermann's "journalism" - his absolute cowardice. He doesn't allow the opposition on his show anymore. His targets are never allowed on so they have a chance to defend themselves. And Olbermann will never go on any conservative talk show to debate the issues. Both Micheal Medved and Dennis Prager invited him on after Olbermann named them both Worst Person.

Olbermann ran away and hid.

Bill O'Reilly's show is a thousand times more informative and honest. That's why he cleans Olbermann's clock in the ratings nearly every night. Put that in your bong and smoke it.

I love the braindeads that "prove" that O'Reilly is "better" than Olbermann based on ratings!

I hope these same people enjoy their Britney Spears albums! I mean, she sells a lot more CDs than Beethoven, so she must be better, right? And "American Idol" just must be the best show on TV, I guess!

You guys cite quantity over quality, and that's just laughable. The fact is, only a tiny insignificant percentage of the population watches either of these buffoons. That's the only encouraging thing; if I thought many people allowed themselves to be spun by these two, I'd have an even lower opinion of the ability of American people to reason and think.

I can't stand either of these two blowhards. Anyone getting their political or social views from either of these guys is sadly misinformed and brainwashed.

Brainwashed? Absolutely. The mouthbreather above who says O'Reilly's show is informative and honest is a prime example! I about spit out my coffee reading that!

The comments here show the main problem in America now - people cling to their ideology and party loyalty as hard as they can, and refuse to look at issues objectively and dispassionately. Then they watch Olbermann and O'Reilly for confirmation of their views. Pathetic.

hmm…one of the definitions of "racism" is "The belief that race accounts for differences in human character".

kind of like how billdo ASSumed that folks eating at the soul food restaurant in Harlem would be screaming obscenities and being rowdy.

he was "shocked" that they simply were sitting and eating, like they would "at any other restaurant".

so, let me spell that out for you. he thought, because the restaurant is owned by a black person, and it's mostly black people who frequent it, that it would be rowdy and full of people saying "mother-f*cker". sounds like he thinks that race accounts for differences in human character.

Sorry, Mr. Hauslaib, but the example you give of Keith Olbermann lying was NOT a lie at all — Olbermann's report was not only widely reported across various media, it was accurate. Alaska's 2006 budget for the Special Olympics was $250,000. The Legislature increased the budget for 2007 to $550,000, but Palin used her line-item veto and slashed it to $275,000. While that $275,000 constitutes a 10% increase over the meager '06 budget, it was, in fact, a 50% CUT in what the kids would have had but for Palin and her veto. So, Olbermann was NOT lying. What you may be thinking of is the controversy about Alaska's budget for "special needs" kids. Contrary to some widely reported (including CNN) misinterpretations of "special needs"-related budget items, that particular item was not cut. The Legislature passed legislation to increase that and Palin actually signed it but, according to the lawmakers who authored and pushed through the bill, Palin had NO hand at all in crafting the legislation.
(See http://wthrockmorton.com/2008/.....-olympics/ and
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09.....ner=rssnyt and http://www.factcheck.org/elect.....palin.html)

So, Mr. H, you'll have to come up with some else to frame Olbermann as a liar. ANd I doubt seriously that you'll find anything that comes close to O'Reilly and his made up "facts" about his boycott of France and the "Paris Business Review."

First of all, I can't tell you what an honor it is to be referenced in a Jossip post. Second of all, here is my argument against Olbermann once and for all.

Olbermann does exactly the same thing for the public discourse that O'Reilly does. He never, ever strays from his talking points and spins each and every story to basically say "Republicans are evil" (it helps that they ARE, but still). Like Michael Moore, his heart is in the right place but he ruins his credibility by selectively tweaking facts. And like O'Reilly, he is a self-righteous, self-important loudmouth who thinks he's saving the world. Worse yet, like O'Reilly he is increasingly "preaching to the choir", telling his equally self-righteous followers exactly what they already know.

The other side of my argument is him personally. The whole "Mackris vs. living with a 17 year old" thing isn't really the point. I know plenty of current and former MSNBC staffers who have told me absolute horror stories about Keith, stories which were re-told in a pre-zombie issue of Radar Magazine. He is famous for his red-faced tirades, his paranoid delusions, and his absolute disdain for his underlings. He refuses to make eye contact with anyone, and asks that subordinates leave notes in a special box in lieu of conversation. When I first heard this stuff, Olbermann was my hero. As I've said before, it was like finding out Santa Claus wasn't real.

Again, I am not saying at all that I think O'Reilly is any better than Olbermann - I think Bush is a goddamn war criminal and Fox News is a shameless mouthpiece for the Republican Party. But the similarities between the two men and their effect on television journalism are too awful to ignore.

Look if O'Reilly sneezes Olberman better get him a Kleenex! No O'Reilley means the death of Keith Olberman's show.

C'mom Keith and a touch of Rachel Maddow go on and on and on about O'Reilly. How about you produce your own 'condemnations' of the Nation rather than 'What did Bill O'Reilly do today?'.

BTW Keith your ratings are in the basement!

The mind of the conservative is like the pupil of the eye; the more light you shed on it, the narrower it becomes.

Damail is insane. Most of the so called "liberal" comments on here at least admit fault on the part of KO and other fanatical/an/or/misinformed liberals. I'm a liberal, and I know KO can be a total jerk. (And a lying/scummy one at that).

But Damail refuses to admit or see and fault in the conservative talking heads, (most notably Bill). This doesn't make any sense, and it just proves everyone elses point. You are completely brainwashed, and incapable of voicing any of your own thought. Most conservatives I know don't even try to defend Bill anymore. They say "he's funny" or "they get a kick out of him" but they realize how offensive, lying and ridiculous he is as well.

Damail- your posts make you seem delusional.

BillO is the one that said 11 year old Sean Hornbeck probably liked being raped by a 300lbs slob who also held a gun on him.

You're seriously comparing a technical mistake (which all journalists make) to the numerous barefaced lies and bile that Bildo spews out on a nightly basis? And speaking of hateful people (like Billy) - who wrote this piece? Ya might wanna switch to decaf.

Don't take this article too seriously, kids. It's just another uninformed, "dime-a-dozen" opinion (like mine).

Places like Jossip are where you end up when you're not qualified to do real journalism.

@Delilah: It's nice to see that you're a Mark Levin fan. Yeah, you use his nicknames for KO very well, almost like a robot, a pathetic one at that lol.. So, it's good to know that you're a far-right person, and that your agenda is pretty clear. Don't know why you hide it, since you made it so obvious lol.. Anyway, KO has problems, my main one being that he doesn't invite the other side on to defend themselves. That's completely wrong, and not only that, it isn't entertaining. But, if you think you're getting facts from Mark Levin and Fox News, then you're a complete moron.

On second thought, (though I stand by my opinion that both guys are dicks –but mean no offense to actual "dicks") maybe olberman is worse to me. I'm a moderate lib and I don't appreciate it when he goes over the line and makes things up or exaggerates for sensationalism. And I hate that he says "good night and good luck" at the end of a show, trying to co-opt the hay days of legit media before it all devolved into a giant pundit fest.

O'reilly, I expect to talk nothing but trash, as that's what he's been doing for like 15 years, so even when I listen to him, I can't really hear anything. He's like the waves of the ocean to me.

On NBC's "Football Night in America" halftime show, you can see the pain on the faces of Costas, Collisworth and the Bus when Olberman speaks. Their laughing is so fake. Anybody can see this except NBC.

Olberboyy is an idiot. Egomaniacal, self indulgent, creep.

Here's a place to make your statement about the freak known as "bathtub boy."

Is this what OReily calls the intrenet smear machine?

Instead of providing a rational, logical evaluation of these mens' performance as jouranlists it just puts on a cheap show of name calling and actually distracts the viewers from the real question at hand: who's a worse journalist.

I find it ironic this is online. If it was printed no one would buy this garbage. The writer has the writing ability of a five year old and the emotional and mental capacities of a 3 year old. The fact that some journalists can actually provide intelligent and (get this) entertaining news on national television must be very angering to one with so little stability.
