Regrettable Celebrity Endorsements

Any Boss should be a big enough man to know when he's made a mistake. So it's no surprise Bruce Springsteen recently publicly apologized to fans for cutting an exclusive distribution deal with Wal-Mart, a company with an infamous reputation for violating workers rights.

But Bruce isn't alone. There are lots of celebrities out there supporting everything from presidents to snack foods, oftentimes regrettably. These are (several of) their stories.

Their Endorsement The Catch

Gwyneth Paltrow
She of the GOOP found herself draped in fur during a recent photo shoot for a Tod's ad. PETA came after Gwyneth with a vengeance, sending one of their infamously annoying press releases, "Gwyneth Paltrow won't be the apple of her daughter's eye if she continues to flaunt fur." Get it? Because her daughter is named Apple. Vomit. Paltrow, fearing that anyone might see her for the spoon-fed bourgeois that she is, apologized for the photos, saying that she wasn't aware that the stole she was wearing was real fur. All a giant misunderstanding, you see. She then couldn't help add in her own brand of self-righteousness, saying she and husband Chris Martin are "basically" not meat eaters, adding, "We know it's the best diet for us and our kids, and of course for animals and the environment." Of course you do, sweetie.

Alicia Keys
The Smokin' Aces actress and singer recent tour in Indonesia was sponsored by Philip Morris International. Keys made a stink until the cigarette company agreed to withdraw its sponsorship. Now Philip Morris might have to pull their name off of a Philippines tour with the band Eraserheads, since all the hubbub surrounding Keys alerted country officials that the company was violating laws against tobacco advertising in mass media.

Bob Dylan
Dylan's done a couple of ads since the millennium, most notably a Victoria's Secret spot shot in Venice and an SUV Escalade ad in 1997. So what if he's selling out for the same corporate America he made a career railing against—the times, along with Mr. Dylan, are a'changin. And at least he doesn't try to make excuses for his brand-whoring. When a Rolling Stone interviewer told him, "This is how I see it: You fly to Italy, hang out with beautiful women, make a little scratch and next thing you're in a Victoria's Secret commercial," Dylan gruffly replied, "Yeah. Was I not supposed to do that?"

Oprah
When Barack Obama first graced Oprah's stages in December of 2007, the Queen of daytime television wasted no time endorsing him for president. And since Oprah was in a position that could have gone either way (African-American Barack, or female Hillary?) her support for the Chicago senator was news the moment it came out of her majesty's lips. The endorsement of Oprah may have been good for Barack, but it was a game-killer for O. Ratings dropped 19 percent when Oprah started talking politics, which did nothing to deter one of the most powerful women in the world from making his wins her own.

Cybill Shepherd
Back in 1987, the Beef Industry Council hired actress Cybill Shepherd to promote eating meat (har har). The slogan for the cow-munching campaign? "Real food for real people!" Not those fake-ass people, one assumes… Cybill was thrown off the campaign when she admitted that she was secretly a vegetarian. Which raises the question, why take the job in the first place?
