Time to Let It Go

Regardless of whether you agree with us that the New York Post's monkey cartoon wasn't racist, can we all agree that it's time to drop it?

In the past two weeks, both the Post's editorial board and the Post's generally aloof publisher, Rupert Murdoch, have come forth and apologized for the cartoon, with Murdoch saying unequivocally, "Last week, we made a mistake. We ran a cartoon that offended many people … I want to personally apologize." It's a level of contrition not usually expressed by the NewsCorp boss, and its rarity speaks to its authenticity. Yet for some reason, Al Sharpton and other activists are still not satisfied.

In order for him to call off his boycott of the Post, Reverend Sharpton is now demanding that Murdoch not only apologize, but "explain how he will ensure that a similar gaffe will not occur in the future." Meanwhile, Councilwoman Letitia James is asking the city's black clergy to block Mayor Bloomberg from speaking to their congregations, citing his "lack of outrage" over the cartoon. Bloomberg had called Murdoch's apology "the right thing to do," but apparently he wasn't forceful enough.

This fiasco is now spiraling out of control. What once was a simple and understandable public outcry is now a monotonous, silly bout of political profiteering. That Michael Bloomberg, who has previously worked closely with African American community leaders during the Sean Bell trial, is being excommunicated from black churches for not getting angry enough is a testament to the ridiculousness. And it's not as if there aren't a million other more pressing problems on which black leaders could be focusing their energy.

The irony here is that, in an attempt to decry a cartoonist for allegedly depicting a black man as a monkey, this bungled protest has turned into a zoo.

Sharpton and Barron are like pitbulls whenever they go after anyone. So it will not be over until Al receives a sizable donation or something else diverts his attention. Maybe Caroline (Kennedy) will invite him to lunch again thus creating the necessary diversion. Sharpton has never atoned for his Tawanna Brawley sins or his incessant tax problems and Barron is a loose cannon who defines the term reverse racist. It really does goes both ways.

The only party that appears unwilling to drop it is Jossip which is hellbent on proving that the cartoon was harmless fun–despite the fact that even Rupert Murdoch has now apologized for it.

Jossip's argument doesn't work for the simple reason that a broad spectrum of Americans of all races, colors and socioeconomic backgrounds were equally offended by the cartoon–not just Al Sharpton.

Jossip's argument also doesn't work because the brutal mutilation of a woman by a chimp who was subsequent put down shouldn't be the basis for a joke anyway.

There is so much self hate at Jossip the pages literally bleed with it.

Ironically just like the New York Post probably lost a lot of its customers so has Jossip.

Since you had no problem with the cartoon in the first place, it's easy for you to say it's time to move on. As has been pointed out, even the owner of the publication said it should not have been published, meaning he took a harder line than you.

All the people who allowed the racist cartoon to get through are still in place, so there is every reason to expect that the same kind of behavior will continue, unless changes are made. The matter may drop when the cartoonist and the editor are sent packing.

Negative images of black people are serious business, and have been used over the years to justify all sorts of discrimination, violence and other ill treatment. And I'm sure black leaders are not sitting around waiting for Jossip to help set their agenda, but thanks anyway.

Lastly, I should point out that YOU can feel free to drop the issue at any time.

thinking that the cartoon was racist is racist. I say let it go and let's move on to more important issues. But we all know that won't happen until a cop kills a man in the tri-state area…so then, 4 days maybe?

Is it true that the special federal waver to own so many newspapers and television stations in the nyc market requires certain rules be followed on diversity, community service, etc? Did the bush administration give them special dispensation as fox was their fav news source for eight years, even hiring a bush to work for them? Is there any obligations in Rupert's agreement with the feds to get the waver that would seem compromised by this event and their blaming the critics and not the racist act?

You are aware these guys are serial abusers and most new yorkers know their not so secret agenda?

These racial stereotypes and insults being used by the Post are as old as slavery. They are taught to children at a very early age who learn to use them as weapons. They are obvious to everyone that has seen them in use. It is akin to practiced homophobia and that ilk.

Really? The fact that he's dating a fucking model in her early 20s doesn't speak volumes? The man (and I fucking use that term loosely) is a phony who truly wants fame and pussy. If he really believes in respecting black women, why doesn't he date someone who is older? Too mature? Tits too saggy? Too not okay with cocaine? And, for the record, a 32 year age difference is never, never okay. He doesn't respect women. FACT.

There's a huge difference between thinking someone is attractive and actually thinking it's appropriate to date them. And you're seriously comparting age to race or religious background when it comes to dating? People with too much an age difference can never form a mental connection. You seriously think it's not ridiculous to compare a fucking 30 year age difference to a difference in ethnicity? You're right, expecting similar enough ages is the same as supporting racial divide. Al Sharpton is into this 23-year-old model cause he's progressive and he's breaking barriers. He's like Frederick Douglas, right? Kiling the stigmas. Remember what people thought of miscegenation? He's not at all into her just because she's a model and she's really young. She's also really mature for her age, ya know?
"Though it sounds glamorous, Thompson swears that for her, travelling is a lot of hard work. That's why she often stays in the destination a week after the shows are done, the parties are finished, the champagne's drunk and everyone else has gone home – to relax."

I think it is a generalization that people with a wide age difference can't connect I know I am as attracted to Sean Connery as I am to Tyson Beckford even though they are about thirty years apart. I just am attracted to who I'm attracted to and societal or taboos of being attracted to someone older or of a different race just don't hold me back.

The point I was trying to make is that it's not okay for someone to date someone so much younger. I only mentioned she's a model later because I think it adds to my point that he's shallow (notice I didn’t even point it out at first?). Models are good-looking and thin. I believe that’s what he’s interested in.
And I don't think she's intelligent because I read some of her interviews. She talks about luxurious bullshit and clothes a lot more than a real activist would never want in a meaningful relationship. But I never even said she's stupid because she's a model. I just made fun of her intelligence after I mentioned a quote. I also pointed out if someone is interested in younger women they are choosing their youth over the wisdom of older women (“If he really believes in respecting black women, why doesn't he date someone who is older? Too mature?”).
Anyhow, if she was smart, it wouldn't change anything. I she was as smart as him, that means he's 30 years behind and therefore not smart enough for her. She should date someone at her same level. Honestly, even if he had her when he’s pretty old, he could still be her father. I just believe it’s wrong to have that much of an age difference. I never said that someone who is 23 can be a woman of substance.
I never belittled her because of her age. I belittled him for dating someone so much younger. Why is mentioning that she’s so young belittling her? If just mentioning the fact is “belittling,” I guess you made that judgment. And I only mentioned it with the intent of pointing out how backwards it is that a man that age is okay with dating someone so young. I’m just fundamentally against it.
And, not thinking models are smart is not misogynistic. There are male models, too, by the way.

I don't have a lot of time to respond, but I feel like referring to her as just some "pussy" is belittling her. I said that was misogynistic because of your wording–by reducing her to her body parts.

And I feel like if she were an unattractive 23-year old grad student, you wouldn't be judging this the same way.

calling someone or some publication out on their obvious racism should never be "let go".

consider this story…

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200.....lon_e_mail

the best part? "Grose said he didn't mean to offend anyone and claimed he was unaware of the racial stereotype linking black people with eating watermelons."

wasn't aware? then why did he think the cartoon was funny? if he wasn't aware of the link, he wouldn't have understood the cartoon and wouldn't have forwarded it to his friends.

racism is alive and well folks, and pointing it out and holding people responsible for what they say can only help rid society of it.

(BTW, the article doesn't note what political party this guy is from…and personally, I don't care. A bigot is a bigot, regardless of political affiliation.)

And, you can't just make up my beliefs based on what you feel. Here's my issue with this all: there is a 30 year age difference. I don't think that is ever okay with anyone
The fact that she is a model does add to it, in my opinion. I think he just wants the life of a dickwad celebrity. He wants models, money, and attention. That's all he is to me. An old man who has the dreams of a 12-year-old boy.
