The Media's Man-Crushes

Are people still talking about Chris Matthews and the "thrill running up his leg" thing? You are if you happen to be CBS News Correspondent Bernard Goldberg, who waited a couple months after Matthews made his ridiculous statement to form a rebuttal. "That's not commentary, that's a man-crush," Goldberg declared on CNN's Reliable Sources Sunday. Pretty brilliant attack plan as well, since it plays off conservative homophobia as well as right-wing ire about Barack Obama being coddled by the press since day one.

Look, Barack Obama is a pretty bromantic guy with a lot of suitors. But you shouldn't begrudge Matthews his admiration. A lot of media pundits become starry-eyed when confronted with a certain political candidate. Below, we take a look at some of our favorite newscasters and their dream dates.

Dick Morris and Sarah Palin

Maybe the reason Fox News loved Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton so much was because they didn't want to come across as big, McCain-loving homos. Which sort of hilariously reveals itself in this clip, where Morris racks his brain for the best person in the world to compare Palin to, and of course it's Ronald Reagan. *spoiler alert* Ron was a dude. So Morris and his colleagues are undermined by their own Gipper-crush, even when they are condemning Chris Matthews for his Obama hard-on. Speaking of which…

All of Fox News and Ronald Reagan

Not to pick on Fox exclusively, but Reagan is like Jesus Motherfucking Christ to these people. The network's push to make Reagan's birthday an "official holiday" is so misguided and awkward that you can't help put feel like hanging out with the producers at FNC must be a little bit like chilling with Ricky Gervais' character in the original Office.

Chris Matthews and Everyone Except Keith Olbermann

He loves the way Fred Thompson smells. He is swayed by Rudy Giuliani's dominance. He had a man-crush on Bill Clinton, and compared Bush to Ernest Hemingway and Santa Claus after 9/11. If his frat boy leering hasn't convinced you he's overcompensating for something yet, you haven't been paying attention.

Charlie Gibson and Brit Hume

Sure Gibson made Sarah Palin look bad in that controversial interview, but don't believe for a second that the ABC anchor has allegiances anywhere other than the far right. He and Brit Hume have basically had their commitment ceremony already.

Olbermann likes but three things: himself, Obama, and underage girls. No special order.

Matthews rarely makes any sense. What was that remark after the nSOTU he made about how politicians don't really like hanging out with rich guys? YO TWEETY, *most* politicians are rich guys!

You left out Fox News' bromance with President Bush 43.

Matthews jumped the shark. He is no longer relevant to the conversation. He just appeals to a small group of people who need to have their opinion validated.

Really? I like Chris Matthews. I like his historical perspective on things.

Keith Olbermann is a good sportscaster, but that's all I can say positive about him.
