Facebook Tries Democracy For the People

Since its totalitarian terms of service caused a massive uprising from users on the social networking site, Facebook has decided to put future decisions democratically in the hands of the people. Such a good idea, except…

"It is a milestone in the development of Internet governance," says Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center. "Part of what Facebook has realized is this is the largest online community in the world, and it can't simply be a relationship between a business and its customers.

The problem with any kind of "Internet government" is that there are only two ways to weed out trolls: making users or council members pay for the services of the site, and/or validating the identity of the users (which would never be done without violating members' rights of privacy). Besides, do we really want the kids on Facebook to dictate the new agenda? We'll be getting rules like:

• Ways to check out who is stalking your profile

• Increased invisibility/limited profiles so that your mom and boss can't see those pictures of you partying and smoking a bong.

• More Scrabulous (d'oi)

• A function that lets you stalk that guy you like and tell you his relationship to everyone writing on his profile.
