Laura Bush Growing Absentminded, Bitter In Her Old Age

laurabushabc2

Or at least her post-White House years. In between borrowing furniture for dinner parties at her new home in Dallas, the former First Lady is also becoming forgetful. How much gray matter is beginning to fill her brain? Enough that she "totally forgot" about watching President Obama's Congressional address Tuesday night.

Or, more likely she and George W. were snacking on some shredded pretzel pieces, eagerly listening to Obama's every word, but denying as much in an interview with ABC News.

""The next day I thought it was so ironic that for eight years I would be a nervous wreck before the State of the Union, and for days before, as George would be preparing his speech, worried about it and thinking about what was going to be in the speech," she says. "And this time it came and went and I didn't even think about it."

Bad American!

Why should she give a rats a** about what Obama has to say? She lived in the White House for eight years and is now ready to enjoy some down time with her husband & children. I do not like Dubya, but agree with Gray Hunt that Laura is a classy and refined lady and is entitled to watch or not watch whatever is in on the boob tube.

I think Laura Bush probably will never watch anything having to do with politics again, if she can help it. I always adored this woman even if she is married to George Bush. She just seems really pleasant. I watched her on some channel talking about the Christmas doings at the White House and she's really quite a lovely person. I'm sure she's relieved to no longer be under so much pressure.

@Joe Blow, Schmcuk Schumer, Gray Hunt: What is WITH you people attacking anyone who doesn't fly a giant anti-Obama flag?? God, give it a rest.

@ Bam-A-Lam…I am an Independant, so I do did not vote for Obama and if you re-read my post I supported Mrs. Bush in her decision to NOT watch the president's speech. I do not nor have I ever liked her husband. I think he is a buffoon and left a nice big mess in Washington with two wars, an economy in tatters and the list goes on. Look, regardless of how people feel about President Bush's administration, let's face it: the man had one of the most difficult administrations in the United States' history–his administration began with the biggest attack ever to hit American soil; and while people complain about the President and blame all of the world's problems on him, why is it that no one points to the members of Congress and the Senate? Why don't people question the CIA, DIA, NSA, etc when they wonder why the President was going into war? It's simply an embarrassment that the media and poorly educated people never talk about all the THOUSANDS of other people running the federal government. Did they not learn about the checks and balances, the need for secrecy in a war where it hasn't been easy to find the 'enemy', or the fact that there are plenty of people to tell Bush no? And hmm, if so many people don't like him, why was he voted on for a second term? Wanna talk about bad Americans? How about Americans who don't bother to even vote and then go and bad mouth a President when they obviously didn't care about who became President in the first place?

On another note, I think everyone needs to look at what Laura Bush has done over the past decade or so: she has promoted literacy and education with Ready to Read, Reach Out and Read, and Take Time for Kids as the First Lady of Texas. Then, as the First Lady, she went on to create the National Book Festival, was named an honorary ambassador for the UN's Decade of Literacy and was involved in the Heart Truth Campaign and Susan G. Komen Foundation. How is that anything but good? She could have just sat around and dressed up like Barbie all day or tried to act like her husband's Presidency meant that she had political authority as well.

Really people, let the woman take a vacation. With the amount of stress and time spent apart from her rapidly aging husband over the years, she deserves it. I don't care what your political opinions about her or her husband are, but the right to pursue their own happiness now that they have left office after serving their country in ways that the majority of people have not (you want to see the President's Agenda's from the 2,920 days that he served office??),is a right that should not be challenged, jeopardized or questioned by ANYONE. This is a sick, disgraceful and dishonorable attitude towards the First Lady.

Noone is stopping "the woman" from taking a vacation. In fact I wish she would. And if she wants a "vacation" why in hell is she on tv spouting off what her and George are doing?? Who the hell cares??
We've HEARD from Laura Bush and her demented husband for the last 8 years. George Bush was the one who attacked the wrong country after 9-11. King George was the one who decided banks and wall street should be deregulated - so his cronies and bands of theives could make off with the American people's money, life savings and investments. For shame Jen, you sound like one of the morons who put King Geoge back in office in 2004 after he was appointed in 2000. In case you don't know it, most Americans blame people like you and your twisted attitude for the disasterous situation we are in today.

First of all I am not going to get into a big political debate with you on jossip, but allow me to address a few of your points.

The fact that a group of people decided to plan and implement a terrorist attack means there is no one to go to war with. We knew right from the beginning the Iraq had absolutely nothing to do with it. Bush needed to finish his father war, since he was a looser as well. All of those organizations you listed work at the pleasure of the presidency. The president is the commander in chief. Unfortunately, since so many Americans are war crazy, he was able to build up support by twisting the facts in order to create a public outcry for a retaliation. Even today there are some idiots who think Saddam was behind 9/11 (unbelievable I know, welcome to America).

American's who voted for Bush the first time? Well actually more American's voted for Al Gore, it was the supreme court that decided the vote. Still to this day Al Gore was the winner of the popular vote. Ones that were stupid enough to vote for him a second time, well they are just idiots. If you live in a red state, you are likely surrounded by idiots. Luckily I never have and never will. I dread even having to travel to your states when required.

Laura Bush has done NOTHING over the last 8 years. Compare her to the work of HRC and to Michelle Obama after her term is up and I dare for you to tell me Laura did more.

Your job as president is not over when you leave office. You are still expected to be an ambassador for the US and to serve at the current president's pleasure. So I suggest they stay up to date and off the sauce and the pills.

I personally wish her, her husband and their whole family nothing but misery. Nothing they can do now will ever make up for the heartache and loss of life they have caused in this country and others. I have not been personally affected by their actions directly, but many have.

Like Beverly Hills just said. Why are they coming out of the wood work now? Because they are trying to shape their legacy. They may be idiots, but they are not dumb, they know their place in history is not pretty and are trying to do damage control to whatever extent they can.

Maybe one day we will see them before the International Criminal Court in the Hague where they should be tried for crimes against humanity.

With that said, I do have some gratitude for Bush, only because of him, was their a seismic shirt in the American public that has now paved the way for a sharp turn to the left over the next coming decades.

By "disasterous situation" I'm assuming you mean 'disastrous' and by that, you would mean the recession. If that's the case, you ought to know that the current recession was caused by many factors–and not all government. Actually, I work in finance for a living. I have a masters degree in this stuff from two top universities. Sure, there were the war costs, but the real killer? Housing. Which was due to BANKS lending money out to people who can't afford it. Which, until recently, banks had more freedoms from the government to dole out money–now it looked like we'll be heading towards a more socialized system due to a lack of proper management. Which I agree, management in the financial market has been more than just a disappointment, but that portion had nothing to do with Bush and more to do with some of the old 80's Wall Street guys who are now CEOs. Wanna talk about recession and debt? How about the $3 TRILLION package being used for government spending? We assume it can be paid back, but can it? You must HATE Obama's administration because if I'm correct and you assume it's the war costs that brought us into this recession, you must be really scared about the even BIGGER government spending Obama has planned.

Funny you mention King George and whatnot because President Obama, who many of my friends and family members have worked and continue to work for, has said that it's people who say nothing but insubstantial material call names and belittle the service of Bush and all the members of the federal, state and local governments who really do the greatest disservice to this country. When he said that, I was in total awe of him. He was dead on. For shame me? No, I respect the work of all Presidents and do my research. I don't name call, I don't try to speak about things which I have a limited amount of information on due to government confidentiality restraints, and I don't sit there and belittle people who have gone above and beyond what they need to in life. The shame here, lies with you.

@Jen: From my perspective, when people look at the past administration as responsible for the current economy, it's due to the stripping of regulatory measures for banking. You're right about the fact that Congress was as responsible for that as anyone else, but considering Bush and Cheney seriously defiled the Constitution in an effort to give the Executive branch more power, it's not unreasonable to give them a hefty amount of the blame as well. Hatred for the kleptocratic cronyistic ways of Bush give way to hating the fat cats responsible for mismanaging the banks. It may not be entirely accurate, but it makes a bit of sense to lump them together since both camps seem invested in making a smaller and smaller group of Americans super-wealthy and powerful.

That said, Laura Bush seems like a perfectly nice person and I don't see any reason to her (plus, I think she was really just saying that she wasn't nervous about a man who wasn't her husband speaking in public). The discourse in our nation has reached a low and I think a lot of it is due to the anonymity provided by blogs. Let's all pretend that we're actually talking to someone's face and try not to be so nasty.

@bam-a-lam - I've spent some time on and sailing around Bald Head Island, which is beautiful and very nice i.e. the people, but there as well as Southport, I found to be a lot of "transplanted Yankees" from the North. I guess everywhere I have been in the South is rather like that. ;-(

Can I ask you a question if you don't mind of your impression. We northerners often find when we go down South, we (I) enjoy the politeness for about 48 hours, then it starts to get a bit irritating because everything (everyone) is a bit slower (not in a bad way, just relaxed, not in a rush). I guess it is just a big adjustment for us, and people adjust after being there for more than a long weekend.

I'd be interested to see what you take on that is?

@Sebbe: Interesting question. I know what you're talking about. We really aren't in a hurry. That's pretty much it. I know from having lived in the north for several years myself that coming to this environment is like getting off the freeway and onto a two-lane highway. I used to come home back then and thought everyone here just had no place to go or else they'd hurry up and get out of my way. Now, from an older perspective and having lived in several states, I have a different view.

To wit: we realize, seriously, that life is very short. It's too short and too valuable to hurry through it. We want to connect on a deep level with every person we interact with, whether it's someone we'll probably never see again or someone we see every day. We want to touch your hand and make you feel safe and at home. Even if you're leaving in 3 minutes, we want you to know somebody cares about your welfare, even if that person is a stranger. We're open. Honest. We also have Soul food. And sweet iced tea. That kind of stuff just takes time, and there's no real hurry. I can assure you that if you stuck around for a couple of weeks, you'd slow it down too. You'd have to - it gets sort of hyptontic. We really do enjoy people and don't want them to rush off. All you can do is relax and ask your waitress how her mama's doing. Or something personal like that. We love personal.
