Newspapers Opt Out of Annual Group Therapy This Year

Since nobody would have shown up anyhow — out of deference to the advertising decline or because, with the advertising decline, they couldn't afford it — the American Society of Newspapers Editors canceled April's annual conference. They join the Magazine Publishers of America in canceling their regular celebration of excess. But for ASNE, the sentiment is more striking: It will be only the second time since 1923's first convention that members didn't meet, and in 1945 the excuse was something called "World War II."
