Thank You For Smoking: World Leaders Taking a Puff

obama_smoking

Barack Obama still takes smoke breaks whenever he's stressed and the news cameras aren't looking, although he's made the promise before God and Tom Brokaw that he would quit during his presidency (as if the United States wasn't a nation founded on tobacco crops). But if he doesn't, he's in good company. We've got a history of chimney-puffing presidents from FDR to JFK, and so do our international neighbors. Below, meet the world leaders indulging a dirty habit Michael Bloomberg would have you arrested for doing indoors.

Kim Jong Il, "Great Leader" of North Korea
Despite enacting a nationwide smoking ban to protect his own health, Kim Jong Il is known to enjoy the occasional fag. In fact, he was just photographed taking a puff while touring a tobacco factory — he's suddenly touting cigs as a treasured domestically produced commodity — even though he suffered a nearly debilitating stroke in August.

I love to smoke just like I love chocolate. I'm not stopping either. As if nothing else in the environment is bad for you. Give me a break.

What? No pictures of LBJ? He was an inveterate chain-smoker, though I'm sure he threatened the press if he took a picture of him dragging. I'm sure it stuck, as I read that they took him ver seriously when he issued threats.

@MarkH: Oh come on. In LBJ's day 50 % of adults smoked. It was cool! Now days a good parent would never set an example for his kids of smoking unless he were a weakling.

Setting an example for us all is Barney Frank, who used to smoke. He cleverly transfered his need for oral gratification elsewhere, but the old waste line suffered as his intake of protein increased.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (age 68) is a famous chain smoker. In 2006, she decided she would no longer smoke in public and only in private, but has no intention of giving it up!! Before that she was rarely seen without a tube hanging from her mouth.

Laura Bush is a smoker, but god forbid that little tidbit be made public.
