Does Knowing You Aren't the Worst Off Make All the Unemployment Pain Go Away?

Rolling Stone. Time Inc. Viacom. Access Hollywood. Plenty. The Financial Times. American Media Inc. They, and many more, have been hit with rounds of layoffs thanks to a bunch of D-bags on Wall Street ruining it for the rest of us. But did you know that in this here media biz, we don't even have it that bad? Sure, some 28,000 of you were fired from this industry in 2008 (out of 1.22 million people all over America!), but so far this year, we're doing pretty well!

That still means some 7,453 of you were gutted in 2009's first sixty days, according to some new report. But think of the less fortunate industries: retail (72,727 firings); automotive (70,058 goodbyes). Hell, Starbucks alone is probably (not really) responsible for more layoffs than magazines, movie studios, and television networks.

So rejoice in knowing you aren't the worst off. The real bad news? When you lose that editor gig, you shouldn't even bother applying to work the floor at Bloomingdale's.
