Meghan McCain on Maddow: Discuss

The youngest, prettiest, most bloggy member of the McCain family was on MSNBC last night and didn't come off as vapid as her Daily Beast articles make her out to be. Video after the jump.

Watch out Ann Coulter: Meghan McCain is gunning for you. Actually, we'd be more worried about Elisabeth Hasselbeck, whose role we can see Miss Arizona here taking over with ease…and higher ratings.

I think she came off quite well. Her concerns about the Republican party are right on, and the GOP would do well to take her insights into consideration. Econ 101 or not, she seems to have common sense and doesn't mind being quite straightforward. Hell, I've lived long enough to remember when the GOP wasn't so hard core into strict party lines and didn't threaten their own over crossing lines. My family is a mix of both GOP and Dems, and we manage to have civilized conversations about the pros and cons of each without attacking each other like rabid wolves. On family issues we can turn into those wolves, but not over politics.

Meghan learned well from her Daddy. Attack popular members of your OWN party gets you lots and lots of attention from left wing media. We all remember HOW popular her Daddy was when he was attacking Bush. When he ran for office he couldn't figure out why he wasn't popular anymore. Without Sarah Palin his campaign would have been a complete disaster. Meghan go back to being an I, you aren't speaking for anyone but your little girl blogette.

I watched it. She means well. She's sincere.

But she's dumb. I kept thinking to myself - if she weren't McCain's daughter she would not have a column, or be on TV, or have any type of forum to voice her opinion.

It doesn't matter how the Repubs (Conservatives) try to spin their message, it's the same thing. People just aren't going for it anymore.

Meghan, or anyone else, can talk at me for weeks and they will not change my mind. I will not be anti-abortion, anti-gay rights, pro-Christian fundamentalist, pro-war, or agree with them on anything. I just see things differently, and obviously, the majority of the country does too.

It's not their messenger - it's their message. You seem like a nice girl, Meghan. But you're out of your league. Use your family's millions of dollars and go shopping, or something.

Geez, Rhonda. You actually exemplify the precise point the girl was talking about, and you represent the group she talked about that is hurting the GOP by spewing bullshit hatred on all things that don't fit your narrow view. I have no problem with Republicans in general, and I don't believe the extreme right wing presents an accurate picture of what conservatism is about, any more than the extreme left wing represents what liberalism is about. Both parties have had to suffer fools. Your attack mode against democrats in general, and Obama especially, is the same tactic Westboro Baptist used to make theirs: belligerent hatred of something they believe is wrong. Like you, they flopped.

Rhonda. Sarah Palin was the final nail in the coffin of McCain's campaign, and even he knows that. Had he selected an actual competent woman, he might have stood a decent chance. As it was, he appeared to have just grabbed the first decent looking woman within his party who he mistakenly assumed America would fall for, even though Palin came off as a dumbass hick with tunnel vision. McCain just misjudged the average American's ability to recognize flim-flam.

The only thing exciting about the McCain campaign was Sarah Palin. Without Sarah Palin, Obama would have had his Reagan landslide.

Rhonda, the tapes in your head seem to be looping. Your endorsement of Palin as "the only exciting thing about McCain's campaign" kind of ignores the fact that excitement is a piss poor substitute for substance. Apparently a lot of Americans felt the same way - 10,000,000 over the number needed to give Obama a victory. I think Obama had his own little landslide.

I never endorsed Palin, just stated without Palin, Obama would have achieved a Reagan landslide. Obama, won by 6 points. Bam, what you just said about Sarah fits Obama perfectly:

Bam says: excitement is a piss poor substitue for substance.
Exactly the words express by many conservatives about overwhelmed barry.

Rhonda, yeah right. I'm glad they're being very nitpicky about examining every single person Obama wants to appoint, whether I agree with them or not, because under Bush anybody he mentioned was a shoo-in. Nobody dared question the Dictator. This is better. Your other comment about Palin & Obama is too stupid to even respond to. Just too stupid.

i thought meghan was refreshing. she stated her concerns very well, with respect and without being insulting. she was clear that no matter what she is a republican, she seemed bright and is good looking. if this is the new, young, modern face of the republican party, heck yeah. republicans and democrats will probably one day be able to work together.

Being corrupt and not paying taxes along with highly publicized affairs between lawmakers and their teenage pages, utter contempt for the Constitution, government intrusion into every aspect of ordinary American's lives, those are hallmarks of the latest Republican administration. Like I said, the GOP has been hijacked by extremists, much to the detriment of the whole party. Rhonda, you being one of those extremists, are not expected to come up with anything that passes for reason or common sense. You're one of the problems.

@weezy: I agree, and I look forward to the day when both parties CAN work together for the betterment of the country. I actually remember when they did, way before the Rhondas jumped on board the GOP and started hacking away at the party's core values in order to satisfy her own need to just be a bitch.

Little did I know until today that it was none other than MEGHAN MCCAIN!!!

I think it is great she is at least offering a different perspective towing the party line at this point seem counterproductive there are changes that need to be made in the republican party (and the democratic party too for that matter) and if we don't at least discuss the changes within our parties change won't be possible.

I personally think Megan McCain is a plant. I think she was probably put up to this renewal of "compassionate conservatism" by Dad and his cronies, who know full and well that the far right "base" has destroyed their party to the point of the damage being irreparable. I personally think that they should just let people like Rush, Ann, and Rhonda keep spewing their hate to the point that the Republican party has become such a laughable joke and so irrelevant that maybe, someday, a younger generation can maybe pull it out of the ashes of it's own self-destruction. Hey, look at Rome. It may not be as powerful, but it still exists.

I think Meghan is great and does speak to alot of people that the likes of Rush Limbaugh will never reach. I truly look forward to hearing from her for the next 60 years, because she does have a unique point of view as an unelected "insider" raised in my generation. I think she also has a better than average amount of common sense.

I do think it's worrisome that both her and her father take this position that they "don't understand economics" yet continue to espouse "conservative" principles. Conservative principles ARE economic principles, apart from the bible belt part of the party, which both McCain's claim not to be.

I'm not saying that there isn't an important need for the cultural side of selling the low tax, self-reliant ideal. We need both politicians and blogger/journalists like Meghan and her father to speak for the people who live their daily lives by these principles, but someone, somewhere in the party needs to take out a calculator and see if these principles really make sense in todays environment.

Spending on Health Care, for instance, is not an ideological argument, it's a dollars and cents argument. If gov. can provide health care it will unburden small businesses from these expenses — expenses which have spiraled out of control in the last decade. If the tax increase on businesses for this health care plan is less than the cost of health care now, it's actually helping businesses lower costs, while at the same time, stimulating the health care industry with additional spending. So unless either McCain or any other republican wants to be the one to say, "I understand economics, I understand how to argue that the books won't balance and universal health care is foolish, and I've considered every economic factor, because I'm good at economics," then opposing health care won't work.

You can't keep telling people not to accept gov. health care for the state because it's "immoral" or against conservative principles to do so. That only works on the severely brainwashed– who are still healthy on election day.

Where does Meghan McCain stand on the right of the Palestinian people to a Palestinian state and the overthrow of Israel?

I'm sick of both Republicans and Democrats pandering to Jews (and Israelis in particular) because of their big bucks.

We wont have peace in the middle east til the Jews are thrown out of Israel and sent back to America.

If you want to debate this with me further look me up on Gawker.com where my profile hame is BookishLookish. I'm always up for a vigorous debate with a Zionist or two.

@gendel: Interestng little read. Sorry, but if the maniacs running the asylum for the past 16 years hadn't launched their own campaing to systematically destroy American civil liberties (which really pisses me off) in the name of "security", which we all know is bullshit, so they could turn us against each other like fighting dogs in order to further their own goddamn political gain, then there wouldn't be any platform for the really far left to stand on. This is the backlash. It's not going to be pretty for anybody.

The past 16 years includes Clinton era because that's when the far right really ramped up into overdrive and launched the odious "christian values" campaign to make everyone feel somehow ashamed to support anything that didn't shove money and power up the Right wing's asses.

The far right neo-cons hurt conservative like the far, far left hurts democrats. The have to be dealt with to a certain degree but kept at arm's length overall.
