What is this shit? Why is there an editorial from Gary Sinise about White House veteran policy as front page news on CNN.com? Because a news organization that prides itself on objective journalism really needs another star-fucking segment about how a celebrity has really strong opinions on the current foreign climate? Listen, I love Gary Sinise (Lieutenant Dan!) as much as the next guy, but I'm not going to listen to his opinions on NASA because he was in Apollo 13.
Not that celebrities can't raise awareness of issues, like Sinise is doing with his Brothers at War documentary. What is grating is that because of his fame, Sinise gets to write Op-Eds for a news org that set its standards as "an objective news page." It's all about that headline grabbing/Glenn Beck bullshit that once reputable news wires are getting into because they're afraid people won't read straight news anymore. And that's sad.

What does his celebrity have to do with his or their objectivity? It's an editorial so by nature its opinion anyway, but whether someone is a celebrity has no bearing on their ability to be objective. If Sinise has actually done research and is putting together a documentary connected to the topic he's probably at least as qualified to sound off on it as most of the talking heads on cable news.
That's sort of the point…CNN as a newswire is NOT a talking organization.
@MG: Agreed and ditto.
How about the issue at hand? That sneaky Obama tried to screw veterans out of their health care and had to back off when the word got out. Major media has really kept a lid on that story for their guy.
Huffington Post, MSNBC, CNN-somewhat, CBS, etc., etc.
are such propaganda instruments for Obama, you would think we have moved to the media world of the People's Republic of China or Soviet era Russia:
But, even outside of FOX, every once in a while, a small amount of dissidence breaks it's way loose.
I take your point very well, and I like how you get right to a point before inviting nuance, which may be good advice for everyone.
Yes, CNN is compromising itself as a major media outlet in the old tradition by bumping one or two real reports from the front page to make room for celebrity opinion. HuffPo does this because it's always been New Media and was meant to contrast with the media establishment and not necessarily to influence it. HuffPo has always called itself more of a variety magazine, while CNN constantly tries to program us into believing it's "America's Most Trusted News Source" or whatever they're saying these days.
I'd go a little easier on Sinise himself. His Apollo 13 co-star Tom Hanks has made very good contributions to the nation, from the WWII memorial to the programs he's produced for TV to raise space program awareness. CNN may have made a dubious choice to invite his contribution and then making the editorial decision to put it on the front page, but I'm sure Sinise is making an effort to have something substantial and relevant to say and to keep a responsible reputation for himself.
Sinise is no Glenn Beck, thankfully; maybe CNN's actually trying to improve itself after having Beck on its regular payroll for so long.
@fanofgrendel:
"That sneaky Obama tried to screw veterans out of their health care"
please post a legit link to this info-i looked online and found only this on FOXNEWS website–but no other legit site (other than super right wing blogs.) thanks.
"That is not in the president's budget," Goolsbee said. "There are some people in Congress who are pushing this, but this is not the president's idea."
Such a move would be politically problematic, since Obama slammed GOP rival John McCain for a similar proposal during the presidential campaign. As a candidate, Obama opposed such taxes and called them "a multi-trillion dollar tax hike."
Romer said Sunday that the president remains opposed to the idea.
"It is certainly not in our proposal. And we have proposed other ways to deal with health care and to fund it. And so no, it is not something that he supports," she said. "His skepticism from the campaign absolutely is still there."
@weezy: I wouldn't be sending you to the libray to do any research Weezer. The following is hardly a "super right wing" blog:
"Obama backs off plan to alter vets’ health care"
http://thehill.com/leading-the.....03-18.html
I can come up with a lot more if you want to press me. Just will make you look dumber.
@weezy: and here are the right wingers from the Washington Post:
"Obama Drops Controversial Third-Party Billing Proposal for Veterans"
"http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2009/03/18/obama_drops_controversial_thir.html?wprss=44"
ITS ABOUT THE VETERANS. the 'media' and all their bias & stupidity can go F*CK OFF (Im pissed… Im off the VFW to drink)
@fanofgrendel:
chill out fan- i asked you because i wanted to know where you read it, because when i googled the only reputable place was foxnews. obviously i wanted to read about it–that's why i asked–that's why i said thanks.
it is about veterans, and i am glad the administration dropped it.
I think it's time to suggest our lefty friends drink "the purple kool-aid, please.
@weezy: I was way too mean. Me sorry.
Aw. Let's have s'mores.
Now I feel bad, don't drink the "purple" kool-aid, Weezy. Let's have milk with our s'mores!
Funny how they always put down "celebrities" who disagree with them and put the has beens or never was celebrities on their programs when they agree with them. According to the so called newscasters, people like Barbra Streisand, Tom Hanks, et al, should not "be allowed" to sxpress their viewpoints, but stick to entertaining. But when the likes of Dennis "Speaking of Has-Beens" Miller, Bo Derek, and that ilk come on bad mouthing Obama, the "news" programs go clamoring after them on come on their shows. Like I give a shit what Bo Derek thinks. These peole are such hypocrites and ignoramasus. EVERY single American has a constitutional right to free speech, and if anyone doesn't lke it, they are welcome to go fuck themselves in the middle of Main Street.
Gee, I only know him as the lead on CSI-NY. I need to get out more. I just googled him and I didn't know that he was so accomplished.
drew, you're an asshole. he is talking about supporting VETERANS and highlighting the incredible service and sacrifice they make. as a two time iraq war combat vet, i am grateful that he is speaking up — he isn't promoting a war so many of us feel is unjust or out of control. he is promoting the brave men and women in uniform who serve in spite of all that. why is he not allowed to have an opinion, simply because he is a celebrity? he's been to iraq and afghanistan - he's visited troops and he's seen first hand what life can be like for us there. he's spent a lot of time shaking our hands and saying thank you and entertaining us with his band. he wanted to share those experiences with readers on cnn.com, hoping they may do the same. intelligent people realize the troops' service has nothing to do with being for or against the war. it's our duty and many of us are incredibly proud to wear the uniform while still being incredibly conflicted with what has happened in the last 6 or 7 years.
maybe you should spend some time doing what gary does instead of a stream of laments.
