Lately those lefty political blogs and media outlets (we won't name names) have taken to calling a subset of Democratic senators "Conservadems." It's a Lieberman-esque reference to centrist double-crossing to stop any progressive movement in Congress, and it's not the first time political lingo has seeped into mainstream slang. With historical precursors like "pork barrel spending" and "logrolling," the fine tradition of Capitol Hill semantics is almost as old as our democracy itself. Below, we take a look at some of the more poetic terminology that's emerged from our government.

| Truthiness | According to Stephen Colbert, who rode this term all the way to Webster's Word of the Year, truthiness is a "truth that comes from the gut, not books." Ex: What about Iraq? If you think about it, maybe there are a few missing pieces to the rationale for war. But doesn't taking Saddam out feel like the right thing? That's truthiness. | |

Snollygosters | A Harry Truman-ism to refer to his Republican opponents. A snollygoster, as defined by one Georgia editor is "a fellow who wants office regardless of party, platform or principles and who, whenever he wins, gets there by the sheer force of monumental talknothical assumnacy." Also, it can refer to a mythical beast "the snallygaster," which preys on poultry and children. Sounds more like a Dwight Schrute-ism in that context. |

A pig/pitbull with lipstick | The former was originally a term for trying to cover up shit with a bow on top and call it a present. The latter is…I dunno, some sort of man-eating bitch. Both ended up being applied to Sarah Palin during the 2008 election. |

Terrorist Fist-Jab | Coined by Fox News' ED Hill to refer to Barack and Michelle's victory fist-bump. Immediately entered popular lexicon to ironically apply to any sentiment of "otherness" that conservatives tried to fling at Obama. Ex: 'Did you see that Sean Delonas cartoon in The Post?' 'Yeah, that was some terrorist fist-jabbing shit right there.' |
