Shantytowns: The Real Housing Crisis

tentcity6

In case there were any doubters left that America is in the middle of the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression, let us direct your attention to Sacramento's tent city, where hundreds of the recently homeless now stand in fear of losing the last piece of land they have left. Oprah featured the modern-day Hooverville — nicknamed 'The Wastelands' by residents — bringing a flurry of press down on government officials to do something. So Mayor Kevin Johnson and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger are packing up the mobile homes of the newly-destitute and moving them to a state fairgrounds…at least until July (because that is when they have the state fair, duh). After that…who knows. Maybe everything will be great by July. But judging from these pictures, it will take a lot more than a free plot of land to get people back in sustainable conditions.

This is what our country has come to and Obama uses stimulus money for suicide barriers on Ohio bridge and dog walking parks in Tx, this is what we get for a trillion dollars?

Lou Dobbs wants to build a wall around the shantytowns. Might be some stimulus money for that.

Rhonda. I really don't think this is the time to stand on your soap box. All of this shit was set into motion under the Bush administration. Yeah, I know, the ball is in Obama's court now, but you cannot erase the past simply because it pleases you. I don't know what you mean by the statement "this is what we get for a trillion dollars?", but you and your fellow right wingers do a terrible disservice to this country when you make glib, idiotic statements like that. That money has not even been set into motion yet. Really, how dare you. I know you and yours are apathetic and heartless, unless when it comes to spending billions on a lost war, and watching your neighbors' sons and daughters come home in cheap caskets…oh no, you didn't see that, because Bush afforded you the luxury of being an arm chair warrior without any consequences of seeing what you wrought. Really, you should be ashamed.

Rhonda is just one of those RP base hacks. You know, one of those fruit loops that help bring down the Republican Party like a house of cards. They get on blogs and state their half truths, accusations, and downright lies. It's a lot like the Prop 8 campaign. I don't think Rhonda and her buds realize that the huge majority of Americans, including moderate Republicans, are getting sick of her shit and are bringing the Republican party closer and closer to the edge of the cliff.

I agree with Rhonda. How dare the POTUS respond to rising unemployment by creating jobs and rebuilding and improving important infrastructure? We all know in our hearts he should be giving tax cuts to the rich so their spending will eventually trickle down to the poor. Right?

Obama has now spent in 60 days what George Washington through George W Bush spent altogether. Bush was really popular with the republican base? I felt awful about the way he was treated by the media (Obama would cry like a baby if he got Bushed) noone agreed with the beginning of the spendathon. We were all just clueless as to what was going on. But to continue to spend like a ——-
with someone else's credit card is insane. Congress never he read that piece of crap, somehow they decided it would be better for them (to admit) they knew nothing then to admit (Obama's telepromter told him, he didn't know anthing about the AIG bonusus (OBAMA IS A FREAKING LIAR AND A FRAUD!) they knew what was in it.
I've decided that a good portion of you, deserve what Obama has in store for you. Just don't whine, like babies.

I find it interesting how all you BABIES are now worried about the Republican party going off a cliff. Save the pity party for yourselves!

You are a republican, you are Bush supporter etc. etc. blah, blah, blah. I did not see one reference to any of that in your posts.

HEY 99.6ers with your heads in the sand. for every finger pointing there are three pointing back.

I guess if Obamunism succeeds and ten years from now with most of their civil liberties snatched away (as well as their money) what will their response be?? IT WAS BUSH's FAULT.

Yea they assume alot. Did you know that the word assume is the most dangerous word in the dictionary? I figured that out awhile back, every time I said, I assumed……………..I was generally in some kind of trouble. Work and personal life, I've found that to be true. Some people just don't seem to understand that you can be a member of a party or support someone WITHOUT selling your soul (and your country).
I'm afraid we are gonna hear "it's Bush's fault" for the rest of our lives. Some people never learn.

Rhonda, you truly are clueless. Please go back to school and study history. Bush got treated like crap? How about Bill and Hillary Clinton? The Republicans harassed that couple and drug them through the muck every chance they got. Christ, Hillary wasn't even holding office and they were constantly "planting" false stories about her. Oh, the blow job in the oval office? Yeah, that was screwed up (although a private matter between husband and wife), but it beat the shit out of some dumb ass rich kid murdering over 4 thousand American troops just so he could show Daddy he was a big man.

Let's also not forget, Rhonda (even though I am sure you conveniently already have) that Bill balanced the budget and we had ZERO national debt when he left office. Kind of blows your whole "Dems are big spenders" argument to shit. You are so clueless, Rhonda.

It also really saddens me that you have more compassion for a man that totally fucked this country up, and none for the innocent people who were victims of lost jobs and fast talking loan officers who misled them into thinking they could pursue the American dream with no down payment and low interest, only to surprise them a couple years later with a much higher (variable) rate. Honestly, what is your problem? Please go get some help. I mean it. This country would be better off without you. Go bother another country.

Bonuses for AIG execs who failed miserably but requested billions in American tax money, and tents for hard-working American families who lost their jobs and homes. Yeah, the country is headed in the right direction. Makes perfect sense.

We needed to bail out the financial institutions so they could continue to loan money, but who are they loaning money to? Who's home was saved by this plan? Where are the jobs this package promised?!!! I think the "collapse" everyone feared was largely exaggerated by the financial institutions. Sure, some financial institutions would have failed but the average client would have been insured. Only the very rich would have been impacted. Well, that explains everything.

I wish these people would get their heads out of their butts and stop cow-towing to the very rich at ur expense.

I agree Carly. I am not a huge advocate of this plan either (Rhonda forces me into defending it more than I want). The thing I am sure of is, if the Republicans were in charge, the stimulus would be much bigger, with tax breaks going to the wealthiest along with it. The only reason the Republicans are fighting the stimulus is sour grapes from the elections and their new minority position. Trust me, if the Republicans were still in charge, the stimulus package would be just as big, if not bigger. The difference would be their stimulus would ignore infrastructure (jobs for every day guys) and basically just help the banks and wall street firms that started this mess in the first place. There would also be no oversight whatsoever on what they spent the money on, now, or in the future.

Erma,

I don't remember the conversation being about Bill and Hill, but whatever. If you wanna get technical about this it all started with Mr. Misery himself, Jimmy Carter.

Doesn't really change anything Obama is still the president who spent more than all the other presidents put together. A trillion dollars worth of crap. If you enjoy CRAP, you'll love what Obama is dishing out. Good for you, your life must be a pit hole if Obama makes your day.

It was Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that bankrupted this country. Giving loans to people who couldn't or wouldn't pay them back was a recipe for disaster. Carter and his community reinvestment Act, by the way, the COMMUNITY sucks. With a wink and nod people took out loans they knew they would never repay. Bush also participated in that little spendathon, trying to be popular with the the community.

The community wants welfare and that's what the community is going to get.

Just a reminder, it was people like you, that tore Bill and Hill apart in the last election, short term-memory problems, Erma?

Frankly, Bill and Hill are kinda like the good-old days at this point.

Bill and Hill are looking like the good old days, so give it a break.

here's the thing–if we're not allowed to mention george bush and his lovely 8 year reign of anti-terror for getting us in this mess, why are you going back 30 years to blame carter for pete's sake? i mean, if what he did was so horrible, did we not have 8 years of the wonderful ronald reagan to turn this ship around? then 4 more of bush senior? that's 12 years of republican rule to 'un-do' any damage poor old lefty carter did. seriously–we've had 4 presidents since then who could have made the changes that needed to be made, so they are all to blame.

and as far as the stupid teleprompter talking points of the past weeks (although i'm sure by tomorrow there will be another buzzword smear)–here's a little reading material:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyo.....-President

looks like beloved reagan relied on his teleprompter even more than obama (although he didn't help write his own speeches). i'm sure glenn beck, hannity and rush are all appropriately appalled at his fraud.
