Madge's New Black Baby Looks Terrified, As She Should

What cruel macrobiotic, gluten-free, turnip and seed-heavy diet awaits Madonna's new Malawian orphan child, Mercy? Nobody knows, which is perhaps why the freshly adopted four-year-old looks so frightened while being led around by Madge's biological daughter, Lourdes…

I don't understand how she can adopt kids who have legitimate, legal relatives who don't want her put up for adoption?????

Why are the relatives then not taking care of this girl? Orphanages and foster homes are not that great.
And what's wrong with a healthy diet? Madge may go a bit overboard but it's better than burgers and other junk food every day.
I think Madonna has the best intentions and can offer this girl posibilities many of us can't. Why is everyone is negative about this?

@Essie: I agree…even the worst day with Madonna has to beat what this child's life is like.

God bless her.Did anyone see the pictures of little david Banda in Malawi he is happy and apparently at 3 years old articulate and polite. Madonna has the means to give these children a good home. Their relatives are either dead or abandoned them in orphanages. Her color should not be a factor this is a country where the average life expectancy is 42 years old. God bless her she is saving these childrens lives.

I really hate to use the race card but I truly wonder if anyone would care if she adopted some kids from a place like Bosnia. It seems to me like the organizations that give Madge the most grief are places that would prefer to continue to line their pockets with our donations.

Dominic McNutt with Save the Children actually said that it was better for a child to grow up in their own environment. I really can't believe that anyone would prefer to grow up in a war torn, impoverished place without food, shelter or anything else that requires the basics for human survival.

@missy: This little girl will have a good life with Madonna I never heard of any of these "keep them in their environment" arguments until people started adopting children from Africa. People have been adopting kids from Asia and South America for over 40 years no one had a problem with that. Why are people so threatened that Madonna wants to adopt impoverished children why does their race matter? She is white her kids are black get over it.

I'm no fan of Madonna, but taking a child out of poverty is a good thing. If this child has relatives, why has she languished in an orphanage for four years??

@MDD: Exactly! I hope she pulls an Angelina and adopts a whole bunch of these children. They will have a chance to be fed, clothed, and educated. Even David Banda's father was impressed with how happy and healthy his son was. I say go Madonna! Keep adopting.

That is a real sweet baby girl, I think her name is Mercy. I think Madonna is lucky to be able to adopt her but I'm not sure Mercy is that lucky, according to Madonna's husband and brother she is "hell" to live with. Hoping for the best. I hope these celebrities adopting babies is just not for publicity.

@missy: I agree with you whole heartedly. I commend Madonna for such a noble and loving thing–adopting a young child living in dire conditions. How could anyone feel this is a bad thing–whether the baby is black, white or purple? I think people like Madonna, Brad and Angelina–and others–are helping to break down racial barriers and get people to think differently about race. I say more power to them all!!
