One Sulzberger, With Extra Cheese

Damn Mark Bowden, are you looking to change publications? Because there's no other explanation for why a Vanity Fair writer would suddenly get so gooey on New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., unless they were looking to switch to the big gray over Graydon Carter. Seriously, the paper is in trouble, Arthur wouldn't even agree to be interviewed for a profile about himself, and yet you write:

He has delicate hands with long fingers, which he uses freely and expressively in conversation. He is long-winded and, in keeping with a tendency toward affectation, is fussily articulate, like a bright freshman eager to impress, speaking in complex, carefully enunciated sentences sprinkled with expressions ordinarily found only on the page, such as “that is” and “i.e.” and “in large measure,” or archaisms like “to a fare-thee-well.” He exaggerates. He works hard, endearingly, to put others at ease, even with those who in his presence are not even slightly intimidated or uncomfortable.

Oh, but the moral of the story (if you don't feel like reading the 1,000+ words) is that everyone loves Arthur Sulzberger and his dynastic roots (no they don't) and everyone is rooting for him and the Times (no they aren't). Good luck on that job interview, Bowden.
