Why Does Everyone Go Easy on O'Reilly?

2388833214_cc1aaa4f6d

Bill O'Reilly is without a doubt one of the worst people working on American television today, if not the worst. His opinions are always wrong and he very often tells outright lies to a public too complacent to figure out for itself if he's full of shit. Old people love O'Reilly because they don't know how to use the Internet to figure out that most of what he says is at best a half-truth. In short, he's garbage, and he deserves to be reminded of that fact every moment of every day.

And yet, despite having a job in which he frequently has conversations with smart people who disagree with him in every way, rarely does anyone of note take O'Reilly to task for his relentless nonsense. Why? What are you waiting for, cowards?

Could it have anything to do with his show being so successful, despite that whole "common sense" thing?

The only times I've watched him was on The Daily Show, and he seemed pretty okay. I guess as a person he probably is not half bad but I could never tell it from watching him on his own show.

You couldn't be more wrong as usual! Bill O'Reilly is one of the sanest and smartest Cable TV commentators. His opinions are always wrong? Based on what? Your idiotic, lambastic, liberal viewpoint? What a joke this site is and totally full of crap written by nimble brained kids. So, he needs to use the internet more to garnish what is truth? RIGHT…because we all know how the internet only tells the truth about all things in life. Not a lie out there floating around in cyberspace. One only needs to read Jossip at it's 1st grade reading level to see firsthand all the lies and mistruths put out there. At least he is secure enough in his beliefs to have people on his show all the time who disagree with him unlike Keith Overbite (the one with the aggie degree from Cornell not the BA he alludes to all the time) who only invites said kool aid drinkers like himself.
Go get a real job and do something with your life instead of spewing this drivel. It makes you very irrelevant.

can't stand his show, or olbermann's–both men have way too much ego (which i guess is why their shows have a huge male demographic.) interestingly, both men come off more humble and likable when interviewed. i'm guessing they play up the blow-hard schtick for ratings.

p.s. ratings mean they're popular with couch potatoes - there are a lot of us out here who read the disappearing newspapers and the internet for news.

@weezy: I never thought about basing my beliefs or opinions on somebody's TV ratings. Should we just start voting for whomever has the biggest viewing audience in the land?

Bill O has his own show, his own (platform) and he can "bully" back.

He is certainly not one of the worst people on television and the ratings at the FOX network indicate that a large segment of the general population tune in nightly to listen to his opinions.
People are sick of the bullsh*t in this country and want some semblance of common sense in a newscast. I don't much care for his interviewing skills (too many interuptions)but he cuts through the crap. And what makes you such an expert on the demographics of his audience? It is really a stretch to assume that only old people and computer illiterate types watch his show. But then this particular writer tends to paint with a rather broadstroke.

Bam,

I think he probably is. He is pretty full of himself (most of them are) but he can be amazingly fair. Not totally one-sided. He interupts so much, I sometimes wonder why he bothers to have guests.

I think every ideology deserves to have a voice or a spokesperson but high ratings do not necessarily equal credibility. Mccarthy got great ratings in his time he had the same philosophy of enrage and divide. History has taught us there will always be a market for angry and divisive rhetoric, it makes disenfranchised people feel powerful and self-righteous if there are boogeymen (be they immigrants, or women, people of faith, people of color the list goes on and on) to blame for the limitations in their own lives. I am all for everyone be they conservatives, liberals, or independents have their own voices on TV, in newspapers, on the radio etc. I happen to prefer an ideology based on Americans coming together to solve problems, History teaches when us when Americans come together we are an unstoppable force. I don't have anything against Bill O'reilly personally but the divineness and his habit of skewering facts and statistics bothers me you should not have to lie to your viewers to make your point.

I also believe that every kind of American be they straight ,gay, asian, white, latino, whatever their race, sexual orientation, or gender have something to offer. I know that kind of talk sounds silly to most of Bill O'Reilly fans. That being said it is difficult to support a man who said and believes it is "important to preserve the traditional "that kind of thinking makes clear that if you don't fall into that group he feels you are a threat and do not deserve to be in a leadership role. No wonder he hates the President he is not part of the "white, Christian, male power structure" apparently being male and christian isn't enough.

Don't believe he said that? Here's video

Olberman and O'Reily are interchangeable aside from being on different sides of the political spectrum. They are talking heads, blowhards who just spew their opinions for people's enjoyment. If you like either of them, good for you. Woo hoo, who cares. Bigger things to worry about in the world other than who is kissing O'Reilly's ass. Everyone in Hollywood is a kiss ass.

@Jess: I don't watch Olbermann but I do know when people were try to take marriage rights from gay people in my state this is what he said. At least his message is that every American deserves equal rights and why as an American would you want to take rights away from another American. I have heard he is divisive and I tend to avoid punditry and prefer to get my news from many different sources newspapers, internet, CNN,BBC,FOX I try to get my news from varied sources. I know people who support Mr.O'Reilly because they get all their news from him but if you can think for yourself watch his address and comment. Bill O'Reilly is against marriage equality and thinks that gay people have nerve even expecting equal rights. That just seems un-American to me. It says ALL men are created equal not all white christian men and by his OWN comments clearly he does not agree with that.

@getreal: I agree pretty much with your thinking, I switch around a lot and don't take too much of what O'Reilly say's to heart, but he is certainly not the worst. I think anybody that wants to marry should be able to. But I do hate Olbermann passionately. He, unlike O'Reilly, has tunnel vision and sometimes looks to me like that blueberry bubble gum girl in "Willie Wonka"—about to explode with psychotic rage! hehe—thanks for the link.

from wikipedia:
58 percent of O'Reilly's audience is over 50 years of age according to a Pew research poll. 64 percent of The O'Reilly Factors regular viewers identify as conservative while 10 percent consider themselves liberal.

just painting with my broad paintbrush here, but i was talking about the people who defend him aggressively tend to get ALL their news from just one source-FOX, and have no tolerance for other points of view (delilah). i personally think he's a bully, and i don't agree with most of his opinions. but he has his right to express them, and apparently he fills a niche. olbermann has the same ego driven show, but i do agree with most of his opinions. his gay rights speech was awesome. but unfortunately he is from that same school of preaching down to the viewer, so he's kinda unwatchable as well.

why some posters take opposite opinions so seriously is bizarre, these people aren't family members so get over it.

i was mistaken to say his audience is mainly male–i was thinking of rush and hannity. i just assumed it because he is aggressive like they are, and i lumped him into the same group.

He was funny, in his own way, and quite reasonable. My God. Bill O'Reilly and Jon Stewart bring out the best in each other. Never saw that coming! Maybe there's hope for us all.
