@Rhonda: In all fairness, former VP noms and their extended families normally don't get busted out by teenage daugters having babies, the baby daddy mama being charged with selling narcoctis, or the VP candidate's sister in law being charged with burglary. This family is writing their own headlines. McCain could not possibly have made a worse choice for a running mate. I can't quite see where continuing to advocate abstinence is going to be such a grea idea. I notice Bristol herself didn't say she would do that, her mother said Bristol would do it. I think a thorough understanding of sex through comprehensive sex education is definitely a better route to take. It's more than obvious that teens have sex - they always have and they always will. Knowing how to avoid pregnancy and access to birth control would help tremendously. Lord knows babies deserve to be born to those who are prepared for them and without a black cloud of disapproval of their parents' behaviour hanging over their tiny little heads.

So, just so I'm clear…the media is not allowed to attack these kids, but it's OK if Sarah Palin does?

@redsongia: Yes, she does seem to jump right in with claws and fangs bared at the slightest provocation. If anything, Sarah being the more accustomed to public scrutiny and supposedly the more educated and informed of the grandparent set, you would expect her to be more sensitive to ways to avoid the humiliation that is already a part of Tripp's little life. I would hope she would strive to stay above the fray, but, guess not. The poor kid's going to be on Dr. Phil in just a few short years at this rate.

@weezy: This Johnston family is obviously not above much of anything that capitalizes on their connection to Governor Palin, which is unfortunate for the Palins and baby Tripp. Levi actually seems likeable enough, due to his youth and his motives seem pretty uncomplicated - he wants to see his baby without having the disapproving Palins hovering around. He's unsophisticated but that's not a crime. It would be nice if Bristol could manage a visitation with just herself, Levi, and Tripp present. Levi's mother and sister are a different story altogether, and they ought to be ashamed of themselves for bringing so much national attention to Tripp's somewhat sordid family story. They are nothing more than attention whores.

Sarah Palin needs to check her own redneck responses to this whole mess, as she and her husband are the one set of grandparents to actually have made something of their lives that Tripp can be proud of. She desperately needs to back off the attacks, no matter how provoked she feels, for Tripp's sake. The kid will be related to all of them for his entire life no matter how unsavory they may be. We can't pick our relatives, as we all know. She just ought to show some class and stay above the fray. It hurts to see people go at each other when a child is the one who will ultimately be hurt the most.
