In a real win for Saudi equal rights, a man was able to divorce his wife via text message after telling to of her relatives the plan. That's because in Islamic Sharia law you have to say "I divorce you" three times in order for it to stick, but now technically one of those instances can be sent as Tweet update or Facebook status change.

While Islamic law hardly gives men and women equitable access to divorce, it is a lot more complicated than saying "I divorce you" three times. There are formal waiting periods between each declaration of intent to divorce, obligatory abstention (if you resume sexual relations with your estranged spouse your intentions are null and you must resume the waiting periods and declarations of intent from the beginning). It is tiresome to see the same old stereotypes recirculating without people bothering to explain that things are a little more complicated than we like to paint them to be.

I don't see how those facets of the law change the fact that he was legally divorced from his wife after TEXTING HER "I divorce you."
