"The Story Behind VICE’s con artist cum administrative assistant" reads the tantalizing title in today's observer, written by famed blogger Doree Shafrir. "Hipster Grifter" is the lead. But when it comes to the 1,000+ word essay on Kari Ferrell, the young South Korean woman who worked at VICE and also is a compulsive liar (although these two things are only related in the tertiary sense), you have to wonder: How desperate are these writers getting for a scoop?
According to the profile piece of this non-famous person (a first in the Observer) Ferrell is wanted in Utah for cashing bad checks and leading a lot of guys on with fake pregnancy scares and lung cancer that may or may not exist. So when she moved to Brooklyn, her small, pixie figure and plethora of tattoos was an immediate saving grace in the land of the Williamsburg cool kids.

“She has this thing with guys where she talks about sex really upfront and kind of puts people off balance,” said Joe. (It was also around November that a guy named Troy was at Union Pool, the Williamsburg bar, when the bartender passed him a note from another customer. It read, “I want to give you a hand job with my mouth,” and was signed “Korean Abdul-Jabbar.” It was, according to Troy, from Ms. Ferrell. Another time, a patron at Fabiane’s, the café on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, said Ms. Ferrell passed him a note which read: “I want you to throw a hot dog down my hall.”)

Those notes are kind of hilarious, and are kind of exactly the style VICE magazine goes for. If anyone who's ever been convicted of a petty crime was barred from working at that publication, the Canadian-based grime scene would never have gotten off the ground. So much for investimigative reporting, Doree. Next time, pick on someone who doesn't resemble 99% of the assholes over the bridge.
