Rolling Stone Rolls, Gathers No Moss Money

Jann Wenner's never been one to make "conventional" decisions. It took him way too many years to get his publications online, and once he finally did hire a digital director, it came as a last resort after he was forced to cut Rolling Stone's size from "mega-large" to "normal size." The recent issue of his Us Weekly publication was one giant advertisement for an HBO film. And now Wenner's making the biggest change of all: Closing the RS headquarters from its home base in San Francisco, where he founded the magazine over 4 decades ago. How long before Cameron Crowe writes his eulogy for the birthplace of his career?

How does Rolling Stone even make money?

I've been getting it free for years. And the advertising is almost gone.

What is really amazing is that a free standing magazine can survive in this economy.

Playboy is close to bankrupt cause it is free standing.

You guys do know that Rolling Stone left San Fran like 30 years ago, right? And that the offices have been in NY since then? Right?
And that this "San Francisco office" was a tiny satellite business office with three people in it? Right? You know that, right? Because it's not like you're some marginal gossip website that knows nothing. Right?

I think that Rolling Stone lost it's focus somewhere along the way. They were more of a "major" publication when they were a fanzine for music lovers and not trying to be People or Time. I used to love reading it back in the day, and even enjoyed when they had classified ads where fellow collectors could buy/sell/trade with one another. I collect old concert posters (cardboard boxing style kind) and contacted Rolling Stone to place a classified ad looking to buy music posters. They told me they got rid of classifieds, but I could take a one time display ad for $5,000!!! My advice to Rolling Stone is to go back to your roots; music lovers and cater to them, then revenue will follow.
