To continue the trend of showcasing different groups of survivors each week, The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 5 zeroed in on Abraham Ford and his quest to get Eugene to Washington, D.C.

While his mantra was “we do not turn back,” events along the way kept prolonging their journey toward the nation’s capitol, and the reason was anything but fate.

Eugene, mullet haver, is a liar.

Fans of the comic books know this, but those whose first encounter with The Walking Dead comes from the television show were shocked to learn that he doesn’t actually know how to stop the zombie apocalypse. He’s not a scientist.

But he IS smarter than everyone else.

It’s weird to think of someone like Eugene running what was essentially a con on Abraham for this long. Did he see that Abraham was a military man and prey on his sense of duty and service? Or did he just get lucky?

Or maybe Abraham was too blinded by his desire for his life to have meaning to realize that he was being played and that Eugene was using him in order to stay alive.

Just before Eugene found Abraham, the latter had been on the verge of taking his own life after finding his family dead. While we got glimpses of his life with his wife and children (presumably his wife and children) we didn’t get the story about why they seemed so afraid of Abraham. Other than knowing that he’d just beaten the life out of four people, that is.

Michael Cudlitz revealed on The Talking Dead that Abraham’s wife was raped by his squad. He killed them in retaliation. But his wife would still prefer to go it alone with her children than to stay with him.

While he’s never been my favorite character, it did make me wonder about Abraham and how he’s come to be who he is. Now I find that instead of being bored to tears by his story, I want to know more. At this point, Rosita and Eugene remain the two about whom we know the least.

There is sure to be an episode (or two) dedicated to filling in the details because the character spotlight seems to be a feature for this series. That won’t come next week, though, because then we’ll be back to Carol and Daryl and we’ll finally find out who was in the bushes.

Or will we?

We’ll find out when we watch The Walking Dead online!
