Playboy's DNC Coverage: No Bunnies In Sight
from the trenches

So far, ya know whose DNC coverage we're enjoying the most? Not MSNBC's, even with the in-fighting. Not the Washington Post's, even with Howard Kurtz is talking about his makeup. Rather, it's Playboy magazine's, which truly understands the "man on the street" approach to this clusterfuck of politicos, reporters, and party crashers is the best way to cover the beast.

We get to peek inside the media swag bags ("a flat white plastic UPS truck that contains mints; an AT&T DNC ringtone gift card; a shitload of advertising for all things green, using shameless quantities of paper and plastic; a card with an embedded radio; Joint Juice"); stop by a few parties; check out sleeping arrangements; get schooled on convention commerce; and hear about all the free spa treatments we're missing at the Huffington Post's Oasis.

Then again, the names dropped of those attending — Eric Alterman, David Carr, Jacob Weisberg, Ana Marie Cox, Rachel Sklar, John Koblin, Craig Newmark — remind us just how nice and quiet New York City can be sometimes.

The conventions are moronic, and a huge waste of time, energy, money and resources–especially by the wayward news organizations who claim huge budget problems, lay off people, ruin lives and then spend tens of thousands of dollars on hotels, airfare, cabs and food to send reporters to Denver for nothing but four days of lame speeches (except for Ted Kennedy's, which was great.) What a complete waste of time and money.
