Al Reynolds Pulls the Bi-Now-Gay-Later “Labels Are For Clothes” Line

Adorable heterosexual Al Reynolds has adorable things to say about his adorable split from adorable Star Jones. You know, the type of cloudy, ambiguous things that could easily be taken out of context, or placed in context, to suggest he might be playing for another team. Things like:

• “I know in my heart that I entered my marriage with love and the best of intentions and leave it with great sadness that it didn’t work.”

• “In my mind, it feels like ‘Dump on Al Month.’ And I’m not having fun yet. I have been called a gigolo, a freeloader, unemployed, a sham and many other things that don’t bear repeating. People on television, radio and the internet have spoken disparagingly of my life, my sexuality, my career and my integrity.”

• “I indeed work very hard as a professor, business owner, doctoral student and author. I play hard too. I make no apologies for that. A guy is entitled to a little fun, after all.”

• “As much as I want to defend myself, it seems like a silly and futile exercise. It’s clear that the media doesn’t want to let the truth get in the way of a good story. I hate to ruin their fun. I take great comfort in the fact that my loved ones and those people who really know me continue to love and respect me.”

• “What I want people to know is that I am not the caricature portrayed by the media. I am complex, contradictory and capable of great intelligence but also remarkable stupidity. In other words, I am a human being. To me, labels are for clothes, not people. So … Please don’t try to define me; don’t try to categorize me; and most of all, don’t label me. Instead, JUST GET TO KNOW ME. And if you see me, just call me Al.”

Of course, all of these important words were made not through his publicist, but through a post on MySpace.

I think he’s right. And he sounds pretty intelligent and elegant to boot. The media, especially blogs like you and Perez, for example have a bully mentality, find someone to pick on, declare them homosexual with no exact proof and torment the person. Personally, I’m waiting for the day that someone commits suicide because of this bullying tactic. Cruel tactic. How are you guys different than kids in a high school who pick on a weak kid or guys in a bar who beat up a gay guy in the alley? Same thing.
If a person defines himself or his sexuality one way, then that is what it is. Period. It’s no ones business beyond that. Funny, the Hunted become the Hunters. The homosexual, the gay guys and the lesbians are now hunting down people and “outing them”. I can’t imagine a crueler thing to do to someone. Everyone has a different family dynamic, maybe they don’t want their families to know? mayb they will be ostracized from their families? Maybe they haven’t decided exactly WHAT they are yet?

since when is it an insult to call someone a homosexual? and yeah, he does sound pretty smart - however his little paul simon allusion at the end there is pretty cheesy …
