An Outpouring of Ridicule for Fired Soap Opera Weekly Editor Carolyn Hinsey

When Jossip broke the news yesterday that publisher Source Interlink had fired editor Carolyn Hinsey from its Soap Opera Weekly and Soap Opera Digest magazines, we had it on good authority that Hinsey was not the most well-liked person in the daytime business. But we had no idea her wrath, sense of entitlement, and questionable journalism had affected so many people that they would take the item — brilliantly commenting under soap opera-esque names — and vent their years of frustration with the "tyrant." Two hundred comments later, we selected the best of the rants:

• I can tell you that YEARS ago when i was a publicist for a NY-based ABC soap, we literally laughed so hard at carolyn????????s antics that we????????d be practically on the floor. She really DID think Randy Mantooth wanted her! She used to sail in and out of here like she was michael eisner, telling us who we could and could not work with (meaning the other 5 or so soap mags that were in existence a decade ago). Unfortunately, the higher ups always caved in to her and leahy for fear of losing coverage in their rag. Too little too late with this firing, but i guess better than nothing. [link]

• It couldn????????t have happened to a bigger bitch! So happy to know that even if Carolyn is reading this from home (whilst she still can pay the electric bill) that she????????s probably starting to get a glimmer of the idea that her entire reason for being is kaput. No more set visits, no more faux-famous friends, no more unlimited expenses or soap star parties at her bar in NYC. Just a long, long, miserable existence of depression, rage, bitterness and (gulp!) weight gain!!! But stock in McDonald????????s cause girlfriend is about to hit that chain HARD! [link]

• Trust me, this woman was EVIL. 15 years ago when i was just starting out as a writer I was interviewed by carolyn and lynne for a job and they suggested that perhaps, since i was so new to writing for soap mags (freelance at the time) that i should ???????pitch???????? them 15-20 story ideas for the mag so they could get a sense of my knowledge of the genre. I did just that, and never heard back. I called to follow up but my one call to each of them was never returned so i just sent a thank you note for the meeting and moved on. THREE WEEKS LATER TWO OF THOSE FULLY-FLESHED OUT STORY IDEAS RAN IN THE MAGAZINE WITHOUT MY BYLINE. As the weeks passed TWELVE of the twenty stories i pitched ran in the mag. When i called again and got carolyn on the phone i said, VERY NICELY, ???????i just wanted to follow-up because obviously you liked my ideas because they ran in the magazine so is there any chance i could freelance for you in the future???????? She FLIPPED out and said I was implying i was going to sue them and that ???????i????????d just burned every bridge in the soap industry??????? a few years later, i was covering a CHARITY event for another magazine and carolyn had me and several other rival mag reporters ejected from the event so SOD had an exclusive. It was insane. She got away with MURDER and the whole industry let her. Good riddance you monster!!!! :) [link]

• Carolyn Hinsey is pathetic and one of life????????s great losers. She????????s a tyrant, a bully and a bitch, except bitches have style so she????????s not even that, she????????s lower. She is VERY aware of what readers, executives, actors, press departments and the like think of her and deep down, she????????s a wreck. She lives a fake life, believing that she can create an image of power and success that will buffer her against the harsher realities of her existence. She is a deeply unhappy woman, SOD/SOW was her life and with her ouster from these publications one gets the sense that Ms Hinsey????????s life, essentially, is over as well. What has she got? Not a damn thing, that????????s what. And that????????s all she deserves!

My bet, however, is that she might just land on her (swollen) feet at SoapNet????????s website or at ABC in some capacity. CBS and NBC can????????t be bothered with her and she always was partial to Brian Frons???????? lot. Time will tell but thankfully Hinsey won????????t ever have the kind of power she used to wield! Off with her head! [link]

And here's two of particular interest — because it ties the Hinsey saga to a one Leslie Sloane Zelnik, the sometimes Lindsay Lohan publicist whose sister Stephanie ranked up there at Soap Opera Digest as the most-hated:

• I agree with every negative thing said about carolyn and lynne, but you????????ve all left the third corner of their sinister triangle out of the mix: STEPHANIE SLOANE! She was right up there with the two of them playing good cop to the hilt. She????????d be sweet as pie but only too happy to watch carolyn bust the proverbial kneecaps of a colleague. And talk about conflicts of interest, does anyone remember the INSANELY FAWNING coverage Tom Eplin used to garner in digest while he was dating sloane??? It was ridiculous. I wonder who will win in the fight to stay a ???????good cop???????? now that carolyn????????s gone and one of them will have to take the ???????bad cop???????? role she vacated. That should be interesting!!!
And to every spineless weasel who has posted something along the lines of ???????well, carolyn was always nice to me?????????????? let????????s be real ???????? you obviously SAW/HEARD how she treated others so how could you just turn a blind eye because she wasn????????t aiming her wrath at you! There were LOTS of people like that in nazi germany who didn????????t care what happened to the jews so long as it wasn????????t happening to them. Sorry for the holocaust analogy but it does fit. [link]

• Speaking of pathetic sloanes, anyone remember steph????????s equally pathetic sister? Publicist to the ????????stars???????? leslie sloane? she was so gross she had her clients (rebecca gayheart and yasmine bleeth) stand up for her at her wedding along maid of honor steph. It was a joke. oh my god, why have these awful, sad, pathetic soap sycophants been able to make so many people miserable for so long! Truth is, living well is the best revenge and these bitches have no lives outside of their soap-obsessions! [link]

Sweet Carolyn is finally getting the attention she dererves. Go get a drink at Blondie's to cool you off girl. You don't have anything else to do!

My partner once worked under and was eventually fired by Ms. Hinsey for challenging her.
The anger in these posts is totally appropriate and accurate about the behavior of Leahy, Sloan and Hinsey.
Their use of fear and deceit as a management tactic was sub-human and the Nazi analogy is also appropriate.
To hear that the 2 remaining enablers are upset is immensely satisfying. There was never anything remotely professional about the treatment of the staff at either magazine. The other 2 should be called to task.

Poor little Carolyn, out on her considerable assets. However will she afford her Lean Cuisines now?

Perhaps Thorsten Kaye needs a housekeeper?

So, she's eleven feet tall, even so a couple hundred lbs. overweight, a personality that makes Kim Zimmer seem demure, a sexually desperate alcoholic with Harlequin romance fantasies featuring sexually suspect male soap stars, a professional groupie who has seemingly never had a boyfriend.

"makes Kim Zimmer seem demure" =

That said, as much as I don't like her on screen, I give kudos to KZ for being one of the frankest people on daytime. That feature where she talks about how fat she got was very very classy and I have renewed respect for her. She never hid she was a handful and I think we all appreciate that better than other divas that pretend to be nice when everybody can tell how vain and self-centered they are.

I've just enjoyed my lunch while reading every single post from this and the original story thread! What a tasty treat (and I don't mean the lunch!!)
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank for allowing all of us injured parties a forum in which to come together to say, "Better late than never!"
These women (ALL THREE OF THEM, make no mistake) are just horrible, horrible human beings. Truly, the scum of the Earth each one of them. I do not say that lightly. I've been subjected to their hatred and worse I've seen many friends suffer at their hands while those friends were simply trying to do the best job they could under the circumstances.
And how dare anyone suggest LL/CH/SS were 'just doing their jobs'. Their jobs were to simply cover daytime in a responsible, enjoyable way — not to try to crush every other reporter who they came in contact with. Who is sticking up for these people! Anyway, rot in hell carolyn and if in fact you are crying Stephanie, i hope the water works never stop. Lynn, you're not even worth the time to wish bad things on. Honestly I don't know what worse things i could wish on any of you other than your own awful existences. OH, wait, i take that back — if SS really isn't allowed to cover DAYS anymore that would be FANTASTIC!!!

I imagine 2 brawny security guards dragging Carolyn to the elevator by the ankles, writhing, kicking, screaming and clawing, knocking over cubicles and walls, chunks of drywall chunks flying, rug burnt cheeks, Lynn and Stephanie stomping her fingers to loosen her grip on the elevator doors, thrown thru the plate glass windows of the lobby onto Madison Avenue, heaving into the gutter.
Ooh, my seat is wet…

my partner was tormented by both carolyn and stephanie - literally, for no reason, picked as a target and repeatedly kicked in the nuts (literally would have been better). I have worked directly with all the supposed-evil queens of publishing - Anna, Bonnie - NO ONE, and I mean, NO ONE - has come close to replicating Leslie and Carolyn's reign of terror and, hysterically, nobody outside this website knows who the f*ck they are! So, let's see - they are universally hated within the only community their pathetic lives exist. Bravo ladies - take a bow! And Stephanie..your days are numbered, hon…we knows things about you we can't even put on this anonymous website. And you know exactly what we are talking about. HR, we presume you are already on this..

Every nasty thing about Carolyn is true. Soap Opera Weekly was a classy operation when Mimi Torchin and Connie Passalacqua were involved. She dragged it into the mud. There was a movie made about all of this - All About Eve - and Carolyn is most definitely a big, fat, overexposed Eve. I worry that this is like when a bad head writer leaves, though - someone worse could take her place. People are suggesting Nelson Branco, who would be as dreadful as Carolyn for many reasons.

NELSON BRANCO ? Are you for real ?

So we are going to replace a bitchy woman who likes to airkiss her "soap friends", insult people and play favorites with a … bitchy gay man who likes to airkiss his "soap friends", insult people and play favorites ?

NELSON BRANCO!!!!! Are you for real? That would be like going from the frying pan into the depths of an exploding volcano!

Felicia Forrester is 100% right re: Branco. He is as biased, if not more so, than Carolyn, who was no slouch when it came to fawning over her favorites and decimating everyone else. TPTB need only to have seen Branco with Tom O'Neill after this year's Emmy nominations were announced to realize what a disaster he would be in charge of that magazine. O'Neill asked Branco who his pick for Lead Actress was and he basically said that NONE of them deserved to win.
This is a guy who, when he started out in the U.S., told Agnes Nixon to her face that he wanted her job when she was dead.

As for Hinsey, I try not to delight in the misfortunes of others, but I confess I squealed with joy upon hearing the news. What goes around, comes around and Hinsey is finally getting a taste of just deserts (this is the correct spelling, by the way. Check out for verification).

If I hear Nelson Branco bitch about Victoria Rowell one more freakin' time, I am going to scream.

She walked out unexpectedly because she was pissed she didn't get a pre-nomination ( diva ) and they wouldn't let her WRITE for the show. Did she really expect they would be in a hurry to write her back in just because she is getting bored once her booktour is done ?

I mean I like Drucilla and all but come on now.

Carolyn Hinsey was MEAN MEAN MEAN!!!! Stephanie Sloane was MEAN MEAN MEAN and PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY!!! The only power these women got were from the agents, publicists and managers who GAVE them that power.
What comes around goes around, we all at DAYS knew Stephanie kissed our asses like there was no tomorrow. She's all nice and cream puffy on the outside but inside a snake like Hinsey.

I hope they learn a valuable lesson in all this after the dust has settled.

Stephanie is redeemable I think, Carolyn is demonic and DAYS did their story around her! Lynn, well Lynn was rarely seen so I cannot comment on her.

But DAYS actors who were consistantly snubbed by Carolyn and Stephanie - Peggy McCay (great actress, good human being)Patrika Darbo (she should be working on every other soap by now. Leanne Hunley (the best of the BEST!!) Judi Evans (legend in the soap worlds)John Aniston (the man is brilliant) and me - Frances Reid!! I have a fuckin' right at my age!! And if people REALLY know me then you KNOW I have a mouth like a sailor!

SOW under Torchin was a class act. It was a wonderful magazine with real articles, real news, wonderful critical article by my favorite Marlena/Connie, and just a pure class act. It was half the price of Digest but had so much more substance. It was a wonderful magazine that I loved for years. When Mimi got fired and all the old SOW staff either quit or fired and Hinsey/Leahey took over the magazine declined badly in quality. It was a all about Hinsey's opinion, the layout was dreadful, it was more trashy/tabliody and the price went way up. It is horrible what happened to SOW. It went from the industry's best to a total joke of a magazine. They should cease production on it. It is sad when such a wonderful magazine got gutted for ego, politics of these terrible women. SOW is a joke and so glad Hinsey got fired. She deserved it.

I have to applaud the anology about the nazi's. I have to agree. I am merely a soap fan and a magazine reader. Each time I read Hinsey's ridiculous column, I always rolled my eyes and thought to myself….what a bitch.
The beef I have here is this.
Sharon Case and Melody Thomas Scott both had a fantastic year, (last year) and nary a nod from any of those publications. Those two women are power house actresses and humble to boot! Once in a while, I would see an obligatory sentence or two about what a great job they did that week.
Are we to believe that Michelle Stafford and Joshua Morrow are the most favorite after a year now? Give me a fucking break. Hinsey has a crush on "the stafford" and it's sickening the way Case and Scott have been snubbed by these publications to favor an aging, overly hyper actress and her much younger co-star.

Nelson Branco is just as biased as Hinsey was. He's no better in the gushing and propping up of his favorites. Stafford and Rowell being his top two. I agree that Michelle Stafford has to be one of the most over hyped over rated soap actress out there. One note and over the top along with Christian LeBlanc. There are so many soap actors out there who get barely any recognition and yet deliver their scenes beautifully. It's time for a soap journalist who's going to cover all the stars and give recognition to those who give their best to daytime and not because they are constantly in the media or in front burner sl's. Sometimes it's those who are not front burner who are doing better work than those who are constantly touted as being the best.

I agree 100% Katharine Chancellor. It's one thing to write a biased peice every now and then when the situation warrants it, but when every single story that comes out of a journalists type writer is always biased and slanted then it is no longer responsible journalism. Those publications she worked for are for the public. The public deserves a fair assesment of the soaps and its actors. Anybody who has been reading these magazines can see how unfair and biased these so called journalists are.
I watch several soap operas and they all have lots of outstanding actors whom never get a nod much less a picture printed. We see the same five or ten week in and week out.
