As if watching local news anchors wasn’t painful enough, tomorrow night, Fox gives us a behind the scenes look at the process of training one with its new series Anchorwoman.
For a generous “rental fee” from Fox–and perhaps to capture that elusive WWE Smackdown market–CBS affiliate KYTX in Tyler, Texas hired former WWE Smackdown wrestler Lauren Jones to be their news anchor.
And it’s not as though Jones is without any qualifications. Clearly, she's not afraid of getting her hands dirty (or her face body-slammed into the mat) and obviously she's comfortable in front of the camera. Plus, KYTX was totally discriminating when choosing a star for Fox and a new broadcaster for themselves.
Former playmate Amber Smith was rejected because she had no real news ambition, according to general manager Phil Hurley. And Jones? She’s in it for the haul. She told Broadcasting and Cable “[10 years from now] I'll definitely be in news—hopefully in bigger and badder markets.” [Ed: By "badder," does she mean Iraq or something?]
Meanwhile, KYTX insists they didn’t do it for the money. Sure, six staff members, including news director Dan Delgado, were “paid very well.” But Hurley says it was about the promotion, not the money, which is obviously completely different.
Besides, after reports of kids drinking bleach and Leprechaun sightings, where else could reality TV and local news really go?
