Anderson Cooper is Not the Press-Shy Kitten He Pretends to Be

We all love Anderson Cooper. No one wants to make America's silver fox out to be some sort of hypocrite or anything, and he's certainly a good, down to earth journalist. But can we just pause and call bullshit for a second?

But Cooper isn’t into the usual contrivances of the magazine profile—there will be no lunch at a trendy restaurant, no “hanging out”—though this has less to do with his view of journalism (you go to the story, the story doesn’t come to you, you don’t create scenes, and so on) than it does with his discomfort with being the subject instead of the interviewer. It’s “weird,” he says, this penetrating-question stuff. He doesn’t like to think of himself as someone who fascinates beyond his ability to report and deliver news. He insists he is neither interested in nor does he read anything that’s written about him, including (perhaps particularly including) the daily panting in the blogosphere, where catty speculation about his personal life has become a genre in and of itself. He considers following his own fame to be a waste of his time. “No offense,” he says, “but I won’t read this article, either.”

The man is Gloria Vanderbuilt's son, for chrissakes. He has spent his life in the public eye, and if he was really that uncomfortable being talked about, he shouldn't make frequent guest appearances on Regis and Kelly. He'd be living it up in a foreign country, or helping sick children (or adopting them?), or whatever it is that rich philanthropists do when they want to stay out of the public limelight.

Starring on your own news show though? Not exactly for those so disdainful of the medium as Anderson pretends to be.

When you've got Vanderbuilt money, you don't need the hoopla. So he can just play journalist (not that he's bad at it) and can hide in the gilded closet. Easy for him, of course it gives nothing back to the community, doesn't serve anyone but himself, and is logically a source of irritation to many because of the good he could be doing.

So he's a closeted gay man of the same ilk as Mark Foley and Larry Craig. He may wear Prada in the midst of horrific poverty and present a liberal news stance, but in the end, he has decided to be a part of the problem instead of truly being brave.

I think he wants to be a news guy, occasionally go on Regis and Kelly because he enjoys it, do the necessary promotion of himself and the program via the magazines, but you don't hear much about him hanging out with big celebrities or being at parties unless it's connected to some kind of charitable event. I don't buy that he doesn't check out the stuff that's written about him because he's made some statements in the past where he clearly knew what was being said out there.

As long as Anderson's groupies believe whatever he tells them he will continue to do his little "Marie Antoinette" act pretending he is a real journalist who cares about the issues.

Of course Anderson is a hypocrite! He chose a career that puts him front and center and he is always seen with celebrities. But let's be fair he did admit to Adam Carolla on "Lovelines" that he lies all the time.

Anderson isnt in the closet, he has admitted to being gay and in a long term relationship. As far as this story; this really isnt a big deal. Who cares.

He may out to friends and family, but he has never admitted to being gay publicly and seems to go out of his way to admit to it.

I should've said he goes out of his way to keep from admitting he's gay.

Anderson wants people to believe he is gay, but he has been going with an exotic looking blonde (female)bimbo since March. They were seen by a few people in Pasadena.

Chuck, Anderson doesn't have all the Vanderbilt money. His mom Gloria spent quite a bit and lost most of her money in bad business deals. Is he richer than you and me? Most likely. But not as mega-rich as most people think.

Um, if you've read his memoir or know anything about how he got his career, you'll realize that you're just being bitchy and catty yourself in this article. Yes, he's a Vanderbilt. But his father committed suicide when he was a child, then his brother committed suicide when he was a young man. He used his family's money to take a video camera with him to Africa and the middle east to film his own stories as a freelancer when he couldn't get hired at a news agency, and when he finally did get hired, it was by CHANNEL ONE. Yes, the 10 minute news show they show to middle schoolers during their lunch hour.

He worked to get where he is today and he's never pulled any of that diva "I'm a Vanderbilt!" crap. So do some research before you decide to be bitchy about one of America's few honest anchors.

@ Andrea: whether he came from Vanderbilts or nobodies, why would you claim to hate publicity and then go on TV? That is why he is a hypocrite. Not that he doesn't do great things, or had a hard life, because that is irrelevant to this argument.

This (non)story sounds like yet another bitchy ass report from the Jossip hags. Jealous much???

Anderson Cooper is a first class newsman, which is something no one running this site will ever be. Yes, he is a Vanderbilt but the Vanderbilts have no money to be inherited. Anderson has earned his own money. Why hate him for that?

Andrea, Anderson's father did not commit suicide he did after having heart surgery when Anderson was 10. Although he is a good reporter(at times), his saying he won't give his opinion is wearing quite thin right now.

It is sad though. If you look deep, deep in his eyes, you will see a certain sadness, an emptiness and a yearning for his life to be completed with his future life partner,

Dick, I thought about that when Anderson was trashing Joe the plumber about owing back taxes, but isn't that how Gloria lost everything? In fact, didn't Anderson also owe some back taxes a few years ago? People in glass houses. . . .

ANDERSON IS A CLOSETED COCKSUCKER! THAT IS AND FOREVER WILL BE HIS IDENTITY. BESIDES, IF HE WASN'T CONNECTED AND DECENT LOOKING, WOULD WE BE GIVING A RAT'S ASS? FARTHER MORE HE IS NOT A GOOD JOURNALIST. IN ONE OF HIS REPORT ON IRAQ, HE DEPARTED FROM THE MOST IMPORTANT JORNALISTIC CREED–BEING IMPARTIAL. HE WAS VISIBALLY AND VERBALY ANGRY AT THE IRAQIS! THIS IS FROM A SO CALLED JOURNALIST, WHEN EVERYONE AND THEIR DEAD GRANDMA KNOWS THAT THIS IS UNPROVOKED, LIED ABOUT, WAR ON A SOVERIGN COUNTRY AND ITS PEOPLE! FUCK HIM! MY BAD–THE MOTHERFUCKER(AND I MEAN THAT LITERALLY) WOULD ENJOY IT TOO MUCH!

Who cares? It's his life, let him do as he wishes. If someone was talking trash about you like this all the time, you might not be inclined to read much of it either. So, whether he was born rich or if he's gay or straight or bi (to answer the blond woman question) or from the rings of Saturn, how does that in anyway pay your bills? How does that put food on your table? Seriously, many of you need to get your priorities in check. Starting with this website. I mean, I linked over here thinking there was a story worth reading, something vaguely journalistic. Instead, I find a cheesy wannabe Page 6 diatribe that reads like some fussy, petulant queen with diaper rash. Whaaaa Whaaaa

He's a cool guy and there are a lot of jealous bitches out there just wanting to bring him down so they can feel better about themselves. If any of them did half of what he has to done to get where he is then they might begin to understand what he goes through on a daily basis.

Don't forget Gloria Vanderbilt, isn't Vanderbilt wealthy the way they were in earlier generations. Her father, Richard K. Vanderbilt, a playboy if there ever was one, had wasted most of the money away by the time she inherited it, getting a mere $4,000,000 when she was 18. More than most, but far from the hundreds of millions the Commodore seeded the family with in the 19th Century. Her Grandmother and Aunt only left her antiques and art, no ral esate and no cash.

So, who is this man with this famous family? A guy who has to work for a living, works hard, and does somerthing he loves.

Back off bitches.

"Insideguy" has it right. All you need to do is watch Anderson on 360 and you know he doesn't resemble the person that is written about on gossip blogs. He comes off completely together, smart and classy and a hard worker.

Anderson Cooper appears to do what he loves and leaves the rest. He clearly fills in for Regis frequently because he enjoys it. He sees completely at ease doing that as he was on Jeopardy. He didn't seem nearly as comfortable on prah so in a sense, I get that he enjoys his field but doesn't want to give up his private life. Is that so crazy? Frickin Beyonce and Jay-Z haven't really ever confirmed that they're together let alone married! I think one can enjoy the spotlight while also shunning the exposure that goes hand in hand with it often. Even when he talks about his life, it's often very shallow (he watches "Living Lohan") or about other people in his life (people in NOLA, his brother).

I also can't imagine that sane celebrities read about themselves because I'm sure it's maddening. I watch AC 360 about twice a week so I can confirm that he appears to be sane, intelligent and hilarious when appropriate.

I also don't really think that one must release a press statement to announce one's sexuality nowadays. Actually, it comes off as a fame wh-ring move these days reserved for people who want to promote a movie or album, or revive their sinking careers. Queen Latifah does the same thing AC does. She seems to live her life, neither confirming nor denying her homosexuality to the general public. You know what? They don't owe it to anyone. 10, 15 years ago, it was quite the statement. At this point, who the f— cares? If he came out on People, we'd all say "I knew it" or something along those lines. If he hooked up with a woman, you'd all still think he's gay.

Yes, I assume he's gay. If he is, fine. If he isn't equally fine. It has no impact on me whatsoever.

As for his choice to have a career, wow, what an a– he is! How could he possibly follow his dreams when he could instead be doing some blow in the name of charity? Goodness knows NYC needs more socialites.

Who really cares??? He is an excellent journalist. His segmant is honest and compared to all the "political" shows out there, his is the absolute best!!! What he does in his personal life is what HE does…it no ones business to speculate or judge. Let him do his job, and dont worry about his sexuality, its his decision to voice that if he chooses to. Stop blogging about this nonsense, and worry about the bigger picture!! He is respected he has achieved a great deal!!! Get a life……..
