All My Children, that soap opera you consumed for twelve hours of when you were stuck at home post-yanking of your wisdom teeth, launched an open casting call for a real-life Iraq war veteran. Well, that sounds like it might actually be a good idea, in that it may bring the reality of war home for a demographic that prefers its stories fictionalized. Like on Army Wives. Oh wait, no.

Their story will begin unfolding when the right veteran is found for the part, Carruthers said. The casting call isn't limited to those who were wounded in the war, an ABC spokesman said.
But the role will shaped around a veteran's experience, possibly including a war-caused disability, Carruthers said.

Possibly including a war-caused disability? Is there a laugh track attached to this item? There's kinda no point getting a real war vet for an acting job unless he comes with some authentic missing limbs. Do you know what it costs to bond an actor with PTSD?

So, soaps are great when the subject matter gets you 2000+ comments. But you can go back to making fun of them at other times? Whatev.

I'm not seeing this as the opportunistic, exploitative mess you are. Many of us like soaps not for the over-the-top fantasy elements but for the shows and storylines that play out realistic moments.

I think showing a real vet dealing with real issues would be an amazing way to show people how our veterans are REALLY dealing with life post-Iraq.

Why would a soap opera be the best venue for this, OMG? Please explain. When they need a doctor character for All My Children, do they go down to the ER to find someone? Do they get long-lost separated twins to audition for their roles?

What?! I watched Days of Our Lives from 7th to 12th grade. DAILY. I taped that ish and watched it in the evening after work and nerdy kid meetings. It was great BECAUSE the story lines were so over the top. I wasn't watching to make fun, but I certainly wasn't watching for anything that could be considered "realistic."
