Who Was This Chick? Benazir Bhutto was the two-time Prime Minister of Pakistan who was booted from office as many times. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was president of and prime minister of Pakistan from 1971 to 1977; Bhutto was a total daddy’s girl.

What Was She Doing in Rawalpindi? Having spent the past decade kicking it in London, Dubai and New York, Bhutto had returned to Pakistan to run for office again, despite threats on her life, as an anti-Islamic extremist, pro-democracy candidate.

What Was Her Style? A little bit Western, a little bit country. She went to Radcliffe and Oxford and vakayed in the Swiss Alps. But she still had an arranged marriage and wore traditional Muslim garb.

What Did She Do In Office? Not much, but she tried to make a lot of reforms.

Why Was She Running Again? America and England had a part in this; she had good relations with both countries throughout her career.

Why Should I Care? U.S. relations in Pakistan are kind of F’ed because of this. George Bush’s initiatives to bring democracy to the Middle East and quell Islamic extremists don’t really have a shot without Bhutto, and now they’re reaching out to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif just to get a connection.
