Like cheerleading or lumberjacking, Double Dutch is one of those sports that is rarely thought about outside of the people who think about it way too much.
But for jumpers, as we imagine they’re called, it’s crunch time. Next month is the Double Dutch Holiday Classic at the Apollo. And lately, the Japanese teams have been dominating, winning top honors four of the past five years.
So what’s an over-funded American team supposed to do in the face of such competition? In the case of the Bouncing Bulldogs from Chapel Hill, pay their way to victory. The team flew to Japan to “study” Japanese Double Dutch techniques.
Ok, studios, we know you’re suffering from a writers strike, so here’s a movie idea we’ll give you for free. Combine Bring It On with The Fast and The Furious, Tokyo Drift. Miley Stewart from TV’s Hannah Montana is an exchange student in Tokyo. She feels out of place, hates eating raw fish and doesn’t like text messaging. But then she joins her school’s Double Dutch, and is able to bring her American style to the routine. In the end, the team wins the Japanese championships and Stewart finally feels like part of the community. Add a car wash scene and interracial romance and it could be bigger than Center Stage.

Funny stuff. Disney already went there earlier this year with their made for TV movie "Jump In!" that follows a male boxer that joins a Double Dutch team.
BTW, The Bulldogs are the subject of a documentary called "Doubletime" that is definitely worth checking out. Those kids are amazing and work extremely hard to be very good at what they do.
